FCA has, at last, announced prices for the 2019 Ram 1500 pickups . Buckle your seat belt, and we’ll dive in. Canadians, skip down to the end...

First, let’s establish a baseline: the 2018 Ram 1500 Tradesman. The regular cab V6 model starts at $27,990, including destination charge, backup camera, hitch and tow wiring, six airbags, and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Hemi is $1,450 extra.

That said, there is no more regular cab, so consider the Quad Cab version at $31,790 to be your baseline instead.

Now, the truck you’ve been waiting for: the 2019 Ram 1500 — starting at $33,340. That includes a $250-higher destination charge and an upgraded engine. Buyers are getting a good deal, despite the higher cost: the weight has been cut by around 225 pounds, and the standard mild-hybrid system increases fuel economy and makes the powertrain far more responsive. Those who want a Hemi can still get it — all by itself for $1,195 (down from $1,450) or with a mild-hybrid setup for $1,995.

Pricing on the expected 3-liter diesel has not yet been announced. The VM diesel has already been approved by the EPA for the 2017 and 2018 model years.

There are numerous other upgrades , from a stiffer, safer frame to active noise cancellations, which add value despite higher starting prices; and over the life of the truck, the mild-hybrid setup should pay for itself.

2019 Ram 1500

The pickups are already on their way to dealerships, with plain Hemi V8 engines; the two hybrid versions will come later. That puts the price at $34,535, versus the outgoing Hemi Tradesman at $33,240, a $1,295 increase. That seems reasonable given the much higher level of standard content.

The company cut the cost of popular options and trims, which should keep the price actually paid closer to the current models.  The Ram Box has been dropped to $995, for example, and the Rebel Quad Cab now starts at $46,340 (there was no 2018 Quad Cab, but the Crew Cab started at $48,790).

The Big Horn RWD Quad Cab dropped from $39,135 to $37,340, a fairly big drop. The top of the line Limited Crew Cab 4x4, which has a standard twelve-inch touch-screen, tops the scales at $59,035 — up from the less-well-equipped 2018 ($56,795).

The Tradesman, Big Horn, and Rebel have a standard mild-hybrid V6. The  Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Limited have a standard Hemi V8; adding the mild-hybrid V8 costs $800 (the V6 is not an option).

The 2019 Ram 1500 is built at FCA’s Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan, which used to make the Chrysler Sebring and 200. The former home of Ram Trucks in Warren, Michigan, is being refitted to make SUVs and heavy-duty pickups.

Canadian prices

The starting price in Canada is $43,990, including $1,895 in destination charges, for the rear wheel drive Tradesman Quad Cab. The top of the range Limited 4x4, with a standard 12-inch screen, starts at $76,090.

The Hemi adds $1,900 to Tradesman and Big Horn. The standard powertrain on the Tradesman and Big Horn is the V6 mild-hybrid. An eight speed is standard across the board.

The Sport, Rebel, Laramie, and higher models have a standard V8. Putting a mild-hybrid system onto those models costs another $500. As in the US, though, the two mild-hybrid systems are late-availability; all the early 2019 Ram 1500s will have the optional-or-standard (depending on model) V8.

The Ram 1500 Sport is unique to Canada; it starts at $54,490, including the Hemi V8 engine.
