The debut of the all-new 2019 Ram Heavy Duty was arguably the biggest news of the 2019 North American International Auto Show and while the newest 2500 and 3500 pickups have plenty to talk about, the monster torque figures are the talk of the town. The new Ram HD is available with a new high output version of the 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine which delivers 400 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

Those figures officially make the Ram HD the most powerful factory-built truck sold in North America, but more importantly, the new Heavy Duty pickups are the first to offer four-figure torque levels from a road-going production vehicle. As you might imagine, making that kind of power requires a seriously tough engine, but for the truck to use all of that power efficiently and effectively, there are a great many other items throughout the vehicle that had to be upgraded.

AutoGuide had a chance to sit down with Rod Romain, chief engineer of the 2019 Ram Heavy Duty. He detailed the changes made to the engine, including a new engine block, a new cylinder head, a new rotating assembly and a new turbocharger, but he also touched on things like the transmission, driveshaft, transfer case and axle assemblies.
