Chrysler Fault Code 41: Alternator field control circuit open or shorted

by Bob O'Neill and Bob Lincoln

As the logic module turns on or off the alternator field coil driver, it monitors the voltage. If it detects a voltage near 0vdc when the coil driver is turned on or near 12vdc when the coil driver is turned off - either condition indicates a wiring problem - it triggers code 41.

When code 41 is triggered, the power limited light will not be lit and the system will not enter limp mode. If the conditions which cause code 41 continues and isn't resolved by the system, code 46 or 47 will be triggered.

One reason for code 41 can be poor wiring or connections; read the page 'How to troubleshoot drivability issues,' check the wiring and connections from the logic module to the power module, and clean and re-grease the connectors with dielectric grease.

Also check for a defective voltage regulator circuit - see the Charging System Diagnostics page.
