Today, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) wrote that the 2016 Chrysler 200 and the 2016 Fiat 500X were both Top Safety Pick+ ratings for 2016 — as they were in 2015. This is the highest possible safety rating, and is made possible by having automatic emergency braking (“AEB”).

AEB (“Forward Collision Warning Plus”) is available on the Dodge Durango and Charger, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, and Renegade, Chrysler 200 and 300, and Fiat 500X. It uses radar and a camera to detect oncoming collisions.   The cheapest 200 with AEB is $31,550; the cheapest 500X with it, $28,605.

Both the 200 and 500X were given the highest possible scores in IIHS crash tests, which simulate:
  • a side impact with a large SUV or pickup truck;
  • a moderate-offset frontal impact;
  • a small-offset frontal impact;
  • roof-deformation consistent with a rollover;
  • and a rear collision capable of inducing whiplash.
