Chrysler, Jeep, and Fiat concept cars for SEMA 2015

by Patrick Rall

Jeep Wrangler Red Rock

Red Rectangle Parallel

The only new entry for Jeep enthusiasts is the new Wrangler Red Rock, which will later head to next year's Moab Easter Jeep Safari. This bright red Wrangler is based on the Hard Rock package with the tenth anniversary edition front bumper.

Mopar has also added a winch, LED headlights, a 2 inch suspension lift, 35 inch off-road tires on 17 inch beadlock wheels and rock rails.

On the inside, the Jeep Wrangler Red Rock has unique leather seats with embroider logos and package-specific badging with a serial number of 1/50 - leading me to believe that this package could become a limited edition production reality.

Mopar 200S

Moving on to Chrysler, Mopar brought two cars - a customized 200S and 300S, emphasizing the sporty side of the luxury brand.

The Mopar Chrysler 200S has a mild body kit and a suspension setup that brings the sleek sedan a little closer to the ground. Mopar also added a big brake kit, 19 inch wheels, a custom vented hood, a cold air intake, a high flow exhaust system, and the unique "Ceramic Grey" paint…which seems like an odd choice to me.

The setup includes a standard Mopar body kit, which includes the front chin splitter, side sills, and rear valance; the dual-vented hood is a concept piece, but the 19-inch wheels and exhaust tips are in the Mopar catalog. Inside, the car has Katzkin leather with perforated inserts and Mopar Blue piping and accents.

I love the look of the package, but I would have liked it a whole lot more in something like the bright metallic blue that is so popular on the 200.

The Chrysler 300 Super S from Mopar fixes that lackluster color issue, with a stunning matte blue that might be the hottest paint in the group. For contrast against all of the blue paint, Mopar added black trim around the windows, on the custom 22 inch wheels, through the projection headlights, in the upper and lower grille, on the badges and across the bottom of the rear fascia.

The team then added a unique front fascia with a more aggressive lower edge, an upper grille filled with dozens of tiny Mopar M logos, a new rear lower fascia, a lowering kit, Katzin leather, T-handle shifter (instead of the knob), flat-bottom steering wheel, and deeper-reaching side sills to complete the custom body work. The company claims that there are over 300 Mopar "easter eggs" hidden in the grille.

The 300 Super S is powered by the 5.7L Hemi, but the Scat Pack 3 performance kit has been added, lifting the output from 363 horsepower and 394 lb-ft of torque to 438 horsepower and 438 lb-ft of torque. There is also a Mopar suspension setup that improves the aggressive stance and handling capabilities, a high performance brake package, and a catback exhaust system - making this modern luxury sedan one bad, blue sport sedan.

Fiat 500X

The Mopar team also customized a pair of 500X crossovers. The 500X should have the broadest appeal of any car in the brand in the US, and these Moparized SEMA cars show that it can be transformed through basic appearance upgrades. Both Fiats had the 2.4 engine and nine-speed automatic.

For the 500X Mobe, Mopar started with a 2015 Fiat 500X all-wheel drive and added a set of Mopar wheels, unique graphics, a roof rack, and a sporty paint job that extends to the wheels. The modifications are minimal, mainly stripes, paint, cat-back exhaust, and a Mopar roof rack, but this shows how someone can dress up their 500X for a day at the beach. (If you wondered, here's the press info:)

The Fiat 500X Mobe, named after a kite-surfing trick, ... is accented with Matte Bronze paint ... [and] "X" stripe graphics from Mopar, colored in concept Mopar Blue. The same blue touches a single pocket of the production 18-inch wheels, painted in two-tone Matte Bronze and Satin Black. .. Moving to the interior, a blue kite surfer decal keeps with the vehicle's theme and ties in with the accent blue seat inserts embroidered with the "X" logo. ... The 500X logo adorns the Mopar door sill guards modified with Matte Bronze paint, with the FIAT logo on the black molded cargo tray (perfect for storing gear), premium front all-weather mats and emergency first aid kit. An additional spot to store gear is provided through a head restraint-mounted coat hanger.

The Fiat 500X Chicane by Mopar looks like a modern take on the styling of the old Caliber SRT4. Mopar has added a new front and rear fascia that are a touch sportier than stock and with the wheel opening flares and the wider Mopar wheels, the stance of this 500X has been adjusted to look more like a race-ready sport compact than a small crossover.

Mopar positioned the Chicane as a "street tuner" vehicle, with its oversized 20-inch wheels, gloss black roof, various interior Mopar add-ons, the inevitable Katzkin leather, blue trim, and a catback exhaust (at this time, still in concept form).

A low profile rear spoiler, a catback exhaust system and the gorgeous Viper Competition Blue paint finish off this package - which shows how much you can transform what I consider the be the most promising car in the modern Fiat lineup.

Concept cars are often made so a car's feel can be evaluated, problems can be foreseen, and reactions of the public can be judged. Some concepts test specific ideas, colors, controls, or materials - either subtle or out of proportion, to hide what's being tested. Some are created to help designers think "out of the box." The Challenger, Prowler, PT Cruiser, and Viper were all tested as production-based concepts dressed up to hide the production intent.
