Clutch and brake pedal switches

by Bob O'Neill and Bob Lincoln

Brake pedal switch

When the brake pedal is pressed, the switch closes and the logic module adjusts the idle speed, using the AIS motor. The speed sensor's signal to the logic module indicates when the vehicle is stopping. When the vehicle does come to a stop, the logic module adjusts the idle speed again, using the AIS motor.

On vehicles with cruise control, if the cruise control is engaged, the logic module uses the signal from the brake pedal switch to disengage the cruise control.

Testing the brake pedal switch is fairly easy: it closes, passing 12 volts (or showing continuity if the battery is disconnected), when the pedal is pressed down. It opens when the pedal is up.

The brake pedal switch also turns the brake lights on.

Clutch pedal switch

The clutch pedal switch is used by the logic module on cruise control equipped on 1986 and earlier vehicles. When the clutch is pedal is depressed, the switch passes full voltage, which disengages the cruise control (if it is engaged) to prevent fruitless revving of the engine.

On 1987 and later models, rather than using a clutch pedal switch, the logic module looks for an increase in engine speed with no throttle movement (as sensed by the TPS). This rapid increase in engine speed is interpreted as the clutch being depressed, and signals the logic module to disengage the cruise control.

Testing the clutch pedal switch is fairly easy: it closes, passing 12 volts (or showing continuity if the battery is disconnected), when the pedal is pressed down. It opens when the pedal is up.
