Just got on to this page to see if there were other posts about the diesel dart and sure enough I came across this forum!

The diesel engine was actually a dealer-installed engine. A few dealerships were converting the darts to diesels in-house to sell as a fuel efficient alternative. The assumption has always been that the engine was swapped in after the fact.

The Simca was discontinued, the Cricket flopped and the Colt was our only small car choice in the early-'70's. They were considering lopping off the trunk on the A-body Darts and Valiants (like a fast back and what GM did), to no real fuel economy advantage.
Interest in a diesel because of the Arab Oil Embargo was visited, but really not feasible.
There were some Perkins diesel conversions for several car makers in the '60's, mainly for Taxi service.
