The first 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demons have been delivered to buyers around the country. With one of those buyers heading to the dyno, we have our first real world power numbers for the monster Mopar muscle car.

2018 Demon on the Dyno

This video comes to us from the performance shop A2Speed, who has a new Dodge Demon for a shop project car. Like most shop cars destined for many modifications, the Virginia-based Mopar performance began the project by making a dyno run in stock form to get some baseline numbers.

Unfortunately, the Demon Crate with the race gas PCM has not reached A2Speed, so this dyno blast was made with the stock PCM, pump gas and “only” 808 rated horsepower, but the results are still impressive.

First Demon on the Dyno

If there have been other 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demons to hit private dynamometers, we haven’t seen them; so as far as we are concerned, this is the first video of the drag strip-ready beast on the rollers.

This test was done with the intercooler system working at full force in Drag Mode, and all of the other standard gadgets of the new Demon, even though it is running on the stock pump gas PCM.

The video is short and sweet, with the dyno run beginning about 7 seconds into the clip. The awesome whine of the Demon’s 2.7L supercharger is met be the incredible roar of the exhaust system as the driver makes one hard pull on the rollers. As soon as the run ends, we are shown the dyno chart with 724 horsepower at 6,150 rpm and 681 lb-ft of torque at 4,350 rpm.

When we compare those real world wheel-power numbers to the stock pump gas PCM rated numbers of 808 horsepower and 717 lb-ft of torque, the Demon is losing roughly 84 horsepower and 36 lb-ft of torque. That is a loss of roughly 10% of the horsepower and 5% of the torque, leading some to believe that the Demon is heavily underrated from the factory, because normally the losses should be higher.

Not Underrated, Differently Rated

The Demon’s factory power ratings were recorded on an engine dyno under specific, SAE-required conditions. That leads to more realistic power figures, so it isn’t that the Demon is underrated, as much as it is rated differently than it would be on a private dyno (or in the distant past).

If Dodge were to test the Demon by simply making one hard, quick pull in ideal conditions, they would probably also find much larger numbers; but under the Society of Automotive Engineers standards lead to lower numbers in the vast majority of vehicles – especially those which lose power through heat-soak when they have been run hard for several minutes ahead of reaching their peak power range.

In any case, this first video of the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon reveals excellent power numbers, so when this shop and other Demon owners get ahold of their race gas PCM – unlocking the full 840 hp and 770 lb-ft of torque – we will likely see stock numbers in the range of 750-760 rear wheel horsepower and upwards of 700 lb-ft of rear wheel torque.
