Dodge did itself no favors bragging about Alfa DNA in the Dart. Hopefully the advertising will be silent on that fact for Hornet.
Frankly I'd me more interested in Alfa than Maserati. I dunno why, I just would be afraid to push a Maserati all that hard. Maybe it's TOO premium. I'd be afraid to scratch it with a stray air molecule or something. An Alfa is less of an issue. And a Dodge is REALLY less of an issue.
The Rabbit and Omni looked identical but were somewhat different.
Nah. I owned a 1987 Dodge Omni; you couldn't mistake it for a VW Rabbit.

These two on the other hand...

And the design is not even that cohesive, which makes them standout for all the wrong reasons. If you are going to to do badge engineering, at least start with nondescript styling.

I could be wrong, but the hood, grille and front bumper seem to be the only difference. And the taillights.

They had a similar boxy shape and early models did have a VW engine but beyond that the Omni/Horizon was bigger by quite a bit. Three people in the back of an Omni was tight, Rabbit was insanely tight. Another minor difference was that the Rabbit was injected and the Omni was carb'd. Theoretically the Rabbit should have killed the Omni in a straight line. Multiple times I proved it was definitely slower.

There isn’t much special about owning a Mercedes, a BMW or an Audi anymore. They are a dime a dozen everywhere you go. Mercedes and BMW now continue to fall farther behind in the luxury sales race.

German automakers defined “luxury” for the past 25 years. But now Tesla easily outsells then, while Chevrolet, GMC, Ford and Ram routinely sell at higher transaction prices.
What? Mercedes' ATP is as strong as ever: Jan-2023-Kelley-Blue-Book-Average-Transaction-Price-data-tables.pdf (coxautoinc.com)

They're actually doing well at bolstering their top end sales and that is making up the bulk of the future product planning. You're going to see more $100k+ models out of Mercedes and BMW in the near future (see new BMW XM for a recent example). Tesla is eating up a lot of their sales but not necessarily on the top end as much.

I thought the Lavante was based on the Ghibli and Quarrtoporte, of which both have some sprinkle of 300 in them?
That's right.

I was talking about from the outside only. Rabbit was based on the Omni's predecessor. Rabbit was only injected starting in 1979 as I recall. Omni had three different engines so which is faster depends on which engine you used.

That's right.
Mercedes prices might be strong, but people these days rather spend their $60,000 on a Ram or Chevy truck than on a Mercedes.

Yes, some people certainly do, and that plays into why I said they are focusing on the top end of the market that is well past the $100k mark. S-class sales have continued to be robust and those start at $114k. Pickup trucks aren't solidly in conflict with their models there at the moment (and yes, I know a small amount of people buy pickups for ~$100k already).

The grille/bumper for sure; I don’t know about the hood. Oh, I see...the Alfa hood has a kink...

I still don’t get what FCA/Stellantis was trying to do with the styling on these things.

I just find it cynical that in this day and age, a multi-billion automaker tries to get away with slapping a different grille to market the exact same vehicle as two different brands. YouTube and Instagram will scream bloody murder. Just wait.

PS - FCA put a lot more effort in differentiating Fiat 124 Spider from Mazda MX-5, on a vehicle that was expected to sell a fraction of the volume of these two.

PS2 - Stellantis must own the rights to the “Gremlin” name. It would seem more apt.

I always took on the GTI. Really surprised them. My brother currently has a GTI Golf which is slightly bigger than the Omni was.

Guess you didn't notice those big heat extractors on the hood?

I actually like the Dodge design better, but in jealous of the real vents on the Alfas front bumper. It might be the lighting but the line going along the side appears sharper in the Alfa

Nope. Not from that angle. Still, that's not enough differentiation.

FCA knows how to do badge engineering properly:

Judging from what I see on the Fiat forums, most Italian car buyers don't care two hoots about American cars. They usually look down at them.
That's OK. I don't care two hoots about Italian cars and look down on them lol. I'm definitely not the only one.
Different markets require different vehicles. For most of the world US vehicles won't work. But they do work well for the North American and Middle East markets. In border towns we see the cheap Ram Trucks coming up from Mexico. They are chinsey compared to US pickups.
Profits and profit margins are much more important than total sales.

If your next car ends up being a Ghibli, will that make you a snob? Be sure to extend your pinky when you drink your tea! :ROFLMAO:

In our 300C, I do stock Guilden’s.
Essentially the same mustard, cheaper pricing...

Shouldn't you use Ingelhoffer since the LX cars are based on Mercedes? /sarc
I've never even HEARD of Ingelhoffer.
