The highlight of this year’s Woodward Cruise took place in Pontiac, Michigan, where the famed avenue was converted to a legal drag strip by Dodge on Friday night. Part of the second “Roadkill Nights Powered by Dodge” event, it built on last year’s Pontiac Silverdome event.

Woodward Avenue, or Highway 1, was closed to normal traffic for nine hours of drag racing, with a total cash purse of $19,000. Over 30,000 people showed up, three times last year’s showing.  Over 350 street-legal cars ran down the 1/8-mile strip between Rapid Street and South Boulevard, and over a thousand took part in the car show.

People also lined up for thrill rides in Dodge Charger SRT Hellcats, Challenger SRT Hellcats, and Dodge Vipers on a drifting course with professional drivers.

Mike Moran won the top cash prize, $10,000, when his 1969 Dodge Charger won a grudge-style drag race; his Charger is powered by a 5.6-liter (around 340 cid) twin turbo second-generation Hemi V8.*
