The problem is there's always someone new to come into the bottom end of the market (VW, then Japan, then Hyundai/Kia, and it's just a matter of time until China.
So what happens to the old entry level manufacturers? They push up market. So now VW and most of the Japanese brands that made their entry on small cars are now taking over midsize car markets and CUV markets.
FCA and Stellantis gladly abandoned small and midsize cars and are on the cusp of abandoning the CUV market here as well with only more SUV like entries coming.
And now H/K are making their move upwards as well. Stellantis has painted them selves into a corner where all they can say is "make it bigger", "give it more horsepower".
