The Modern Street Hemi Shootout series didn’t have an event in July, but the world’s quickest and stronger late-model Hemi-powered vehicles headed to Maryland International Raceway in late June for the third event of the 2018 schedule. MIR was supposed to be a two-day event, but rains on Friday forced the track and the event organizers to jam everything into a single day. Fortunately, Dan VanHorn, his team of helpers and the track officials worked together to make the most of the second day of the event – leading to some awesome Mopar racing action.

While the insanely-quick Jeeps of Harrison Zauke and Brian Brunt claimed the Demon Performance Super Pro and ThiTek Pro classes, Chris Dufresne and his 2011 Challenger were the big winners – taking home the title for the True Street Performance Modified Class and the Whipple Superchargers King of the Hill shootout.

The classes at the MSHS Maryland Event included:
* Demon Performance Super Pro Class – Heads Up, Run 8s to Be Competitive
* ThiTek Pro Class –  9.50 index
* True Street Performance Modified Class – 10.50 index
* Legmaker Intakes Super Stock Class – 11.50 index
* Gearhead Fabrications Street Class – 12.50 index
* East Coast MoParts Pentastar Bracket Class – Bracket Dial-In
* High Horse Performance Hellcat Shootout – 10.00 index
* A2Speed Demon Class – Heads Up
* American Muscle Performance Rookie Class – Bracket Dial-In
* Whipple Superchargers King of the Hill – Bracket Dial-In

Class-By-Class Rundown from Maryland

In the East Coast MoParts Pentastar Bracket class, Kate Tout and her 2010 Dodge Challenger ran an 11.70 on an 11.68 dial to beat John Govenettio and his Charger when the sedan ran a 12.63 on a 12.64 dial. This was, by far, the biggest class, so Kate had to go through six rounds to take home the win.

In the Gearhead Fabrications Street 12.50 index class, Silas Richardson and his murdered-out 2014 Chrysler 300 took on Jon Puglise and his 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Richardson treed Puglise hard (.159 to .350), forcing the Jeep driver to run under with a 12.479 while the 300 got the win with a 12.639.

In the Legmaker Intakes Super Stock 11.50 index class, Jennifer Wagner and her 2018 Dodge Charger battled Delano McFarlane and his 2015 Challenger. The two were very tight at the starting line and they both ran under the index time, but with a time of 11.469, Wagner beat McFarlane’s 11.465 to take the class title.

In the True Street Performance Modified 10.50 index class, Chris Dufresne and his 2011 Challenger took on Justin Skudder and his 2006 Charger. These same two drivers went head-to-head in the finals of the Rockingham event , except Dufresne was driving Dan VanHorn’s Hellcat Charger in the finals back in May. This time around, he was driving his supercharged Challenger. Both drivers pulled great reaction times (.003 for Skudder, .056 for Dufresne), but the Challenger got down the track quicker – winning with a 10.533 to the Charger’s 10.608. Dufresne also won the first event of the season in New Orleans, so he is undefeated in the Modified class this year.

In the ThiTek Pro 9.50 index class, we had another repeat from the previous event. As was the case in Rockingham back in May, Brian Brunt and his 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee took on Jon Deter and his 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Deter grabbed the hole shot advantage (.052 to .091), but for the second event in a row, Brunt took the win – running a 9.861 to Deter’s 10.122.

In the heads-up Demon Performance Super Pro Class, the finals in Maryland had a pair of 2007 Jeeps squaring off for the trophy. This race had all of the ingredients for an incredible drag race, but Harrison Zauke took the win as soon as the green lights dropped, with Jimmy Koutsoubis redlighting. Even though it was a foul-win, both vehicles ran hard with Zauke running a 9.083 while Koutsoubis ran a 9.118.

In the A2Speed Demon class, Nancy Gennarelli and her familiar silver 2018 Demon took on Michael Sudul and his Demon. Gennarelli took the win with a 10.215 to Sudul’s 10.484. Gennarelli also won the Demon class in Rockingham while finishing second in New Orelans.

In the High Horse Performance Hellcat 10.00 Shootout, Jack Reynolds and his 2015 Hellcat Challenger ran a 10.481 coasting through the traps to beat Roger Helmick and his 2016 Hellcat Challenger, who ran a 10.437, losing the race on the tree.

In the new American Muscle Performance Rookie bracket class, Curt Pohl and his 2018 Challenger ran an 11.023 on a 10.94 dial, beating Thomas Shifflett Jr and his 2014 Challenger with a time of 14.781 on a 13.60 dial.

Finally, in the Whipple Superchargers King of the Hill bracket class Chris Dufresne faced Jennifer Wagner in the final round. Dufresne and his Challenger got to the KOTH class by winning the 10.50 Modified class while Wagner won the 11.50 Super Stock class. To get to the finals, Dufresne beat Brian Brunt and Silas Richardson while Wagner beat Kate Tout in the first round and had a single to the finals.

In the finals, Dufresne dialed a 10.55 and Wagner dialed an 11.57. Dufresne won the starting line battle (.150 to .234) and read dead-on his dial while Jennifer Wagner broke out, running an 11.55 on the 11.57 dial.
