According to one article posted above, FCA rebuffed several overtures (not previously disclosed) by PSA. In the article you just posted, the deal between Renault and FCA fell apart, but if it could be made to work in the future for all parties they would be interested again according to Senard. So everybody is looking for a dancing partner, but they haven't found the right song to bring them together. So the beat goes on, one could say?

As I've said multiple times, there are always discussions that go on behind closed doors, most of which is not meant for public consumption. Everybody is and should be looking for ways to make their company better, and mergers/acquisitions are only a part of that.

Looking back, I find it odd that this all became public before any issues with the French government's involvement in Renault were addressed.
Normally that's the kind of stuff negotiated before, not after, an announcement.
Unless the intent was to "shame" the French government for trying to maintain their interests.

JLR has become a zombie no one can turn into a profitable automaker. I doubt the Brexit uncertainty is going to help.

Point taken.
And I don't say that as a dig against him personally. There are more than a few brands from several automakers that are languishing about without a defined direction (or have a direction, but no success). If it were easy, everyone would be doing it (being successful, that is).

JLR ... huh. You want to talk synergies? Jeep handles the mass production, Land Rover handles the premium — they can share a good deal of technology and expertise between them. Nobody said Land Rover has to stay in England forever. Manufacturing can be anywhere... Jaguar would be a perfect fit for Maserati; we've already seen that the secret to a successful Jaguar is applying Coventry styling and performance tweaks to a mainstream car (Ford Mondeo).

I can see Alfa Romeos with minor tweaking and completely different sheet metal, with those fabulous Jaguar curves and the more famous (in the US) Jaguar nameplate, taking the market by storm.

Was this a joke? The X-type was considered a low point in Jaguar history. I'd stay as far away from JLR as possible if I were FCA. Jaguar is a dumpster fire right now. The sedans are also-rans at best and even their CUVs aren't selling as well as they should. Their interiors are largely at the bottom of the class. Jaguar and Alfa would do nothing to lift each other up; they have similar competencies and weaknesses.

Also of interest, BMW is increasingly becoming a heavy partner to JLR. Both ICE and electric powertrains are going to have a heavy BMW stamp moving forward.
