Let's see, in 1974 my dad, who was an officer in the largest bank in New England, was making about $15K per year for a family of 5. We had two 8-yr old clunky cars. So while the price looks right, it was just as much out of reach as todays $30K+ cars are for the average person. :)

The 225ci 6 cyl cost $72.90?
Is that an upgrade over the stock 6 cyl? Or did you have to pay for the engine even though the Sport cam with a 6 cyl engine?

In 1974 the Nixon wage and price controls were abolished and prices of goods such as automobiles skyrocketed. From 1973 to 1975 the typical car with same equipment increased in cost by $800 - $1000.

In 1974 the 170 slant six was the standard engine in the Dodge Dart. The 225 six with slightly more horsepower and torque was an upgrade.

In 1974 the Nixon wage and price controls were abolished and prices of goods such as automobiles skyrocketed. From 1973 to 1975 the typical car with same equipment increased in cost by $800 - $1000.



In 1974 the 170 slant six was the standard engine in the Dodge Dart. The 225 six with slightly more horsepower and torque was an upgrade.
I think that should be the 198 slant six that was standard.

$3500 in 1974 = $18672 today.

Yes, but you can't make that direct comparison, because other expenses have increased or decreased at vastly different rates from inflation. Housing is far more expensive when adjusted for inflation, for instance. So the same percentage of money is not necessarily available from a household income.

My first new vehicle was a 1974 Ford E100 window van. $3000 out the door. 300 cu in six, three on the tree. I was making $3.50 per hour. Then along came kids.

We had a 74 Dodge Dart sport . It totally rusted out in less than 5 years . you could see the road thru the floor by year 5 .

I remember that quite well. Went to bed when the price of a loaf of bread was 45 cents , woke up to a $1.50, boss laughed when I asked for a raise. Since I worked in NYC I joined the protests outside super markets. That's when
I became a political activist. Funny I dropped out any kind of involvement in anything after I returned from Vietnam. I have been a voter since Nixon.

Look at the destination charge!!!!!
It didn't have to travel too far!

Not like today's cars, where today, you probably still pay hundreds of $ for a destination charge, even if you pick it up at the manufacturing plant.

YUP! It used to be computed by distance from the factory.
Now, one big price fits all!

Yeah. Dad was Front End Design Supervisor by then. I doubt he made $20k a year.

The 198 was that away of upping the 170 for marketing? RockAuto only shows the 198 cu in (3.2 L) or Slant 6 or 225 cu in (3.7 L) Slant-6 for that year. Looks like 1971 was the first year (170) for it. I had 1984 B van with a slant 6 I pull it for timing chain at 150k...The crank had no wear mic it, but I did replace the chain & rings. They were long lived engines for sure!

The 170 slant-6 was around from the beginning - 1961, I believe. It was stroked to 225 CID as an optional engine with more power.
Around 1971 or thereabouts, the 170 was stroked a little more to make 198 CID, for just enough power to offset what had been lost to emissions controls. The 225 remained. Eventually (1974 or 1975?) they did away with the 198, as it just had too little power for even a base engine.
Others can provide the exact years, but that's the history of it.
