I know this is a real guessing game but take a swing. Seems like fuel pumps always fail when the tank is 3/4 or more full, making it even tougher for a DIY'er to replace. I would like to replace the one in the 2002 we recently bought while the tank is nearly empty and I'm pondering on when to do it. I have no idea if it's ever been replaced before so we'll assume it's OEM.

It's 11 years old of course, and has about 101k miles on it. When would you replace it?

Bob, I don't want to buy a pump nor containers to hold gas. That's what I'm trying to prevent by doing some advance maintenance. On my '90 2.5 Turbo, the pump went out in '99 but I can't recall the mileage. The pump on our '96 3.0L went out in '07 at about 150k. I may just change it since it's already 11 years old (if OEM) and that's far past both of my most recent 2 vans.
