I have found that spirited driving, driving over 65 mph and cold weather will lower the m p g. My usual winter mpg in mixed highway/local driving is 24-26 mpg but in the summer I can average 26-28mpg. Long trips over relatively flat landscape - for me going from CT to Prince Edward Island in Canada is the most common application of this - I can get up to 32 mpg and even hit 33 mpg once. "Real" gasoline of course helps as well.
