The Alfa Romeo Giulia is Motor Trend's 2018 Car of the Year. This is the first-ever COTY award for Alfa Romeo, the first for an Italian marque, and the first for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

The last Chrysler vehicle to win the Motor Trend honors was the 2005 Chrysler 300, during the DaimlerChrysler period.

The Alfa was one of eight finalists, including the Honda Accord, Honda Civic Type R, Kia Rio, Kia Stinger, Lexus LC, Porsche Panamera, and Tesla Model 3. The selection was made following a week of testing at an automaker proving ground in California.

Motor Trend's judges made their decision based on what Edward Loh, the magazine's editor-in-chief, described as "the sheer joy that the Alfa Romeo Giulia puts back into driving."

The judges were impressed by the base Giulia's performance capabilities and premium touches, while one judge said the line-topping Quadrifoglio is "the best pure sports sedan you can buy today."
