I have an 1989 Dodge Lancer, I failed state inspection for bad ball joint.

Once I got everything disconnected from around the area, using the ball joint press I attempted to get the old one off. This is where I came into a problem. The pin is freely moving around, I cant get the press to stay straight on there long enough to apply the pressure needed to get it out. Anyone have the same issues? or any tips on how to keep the ball joint from freely moving around long enough to press it out.

Any help would be greatly appricitated.

Secondly, you can tack weld the pin to keep it from moving.

What we did was took a socket, placed it into the press which snugly fit around the pin, holding it straight so we could apply pressure. That worked well, when applying the first one, we ended up having to use both of the pressure plates in the device because it wouldn't sit on the underside of the ball joint without slipping off under pressure.
