The long-rumored metric-ton Ram has finally launched— in Dubai. However, the “Ram 1200” is a rebadged Mitsubishi L200, just like the recently launched Fiat Fullback — and the old Dodge Ram 50 .

Sold in both single and double cab forms, with manual or automatic gearing and RWD and 4x4 versions, the Ram 1200 will be sold next year.

In the Middle East, the engines are Mitsubishis — a 2.5 liter, 126 hp diesel or 2.4 liter, 130 hp gasoline engine.  The length is 206.5 or 211.4 inches, depending on cab; payload goes up to 2,568 pounds, with towing of up to three metric tons.

The 4x4 versions have settings for rear wheel drive, four wheel drive (up to 62 mph), and low-gear four wheel drive.

Some years ago, a Chrysler-based metric-ton pickup appeared in FCA’s overall product plans, but this plan was abandoned, most likely due to lack of engineering resources and low sales potential within the US. Like the Ram 50, the Fullback and Ram 1200 are made by Mitsubishi itself.

The Ram 1200 was launched alongside the Ram 1500 Rebel and Limited in the Middle East. Ram is to expand its 1500 lineup in the Middle East from eight to seventeen as it seeks to grow in new regions.
