Missing Mopars of 2015: Return of the Ramcharger
Ram Ramcharger isn't a catchy name, and Dodge Ramcharger is odd when Ram is its own brand - so what? Full size SUVs are booming. There's no place to make it now, but a third "spillover" truck plant to ease production of Wrangler variants and Ram pickups would fill that need; or the Ramcharger could protect against a dropoff in Ram pickup demand.
As for fuel economy, Ram pickups have turned to efficient diesels, eight-speed automatics, and friction/parasitic loss reduction; and FCA US has its stop-start and hybrid systems. The closed roof body would cut weight from Ram. It could be the best-performing large SUV with Ram's exclusive suspensions, drawing buyers away from the well-engineered Suburban/Tahoe and Yukon. It would also make Dodge/Ram a one-stop shop for fleets that need a traditional body-on-frame full-size SUV (such as state governments).
