While the Covid-19 pandemic has led to the cancelation of just about every event planned around the 2020 Woodward Dream Cruise, the Modern Street Hemi Shootout’s ThiTek “Hemi’Nsanity” will still be held on August 16 at Lapeer International Raceway. Roadkill Nights by Dodge, the actual Woodward Dream Cruise and all of the other events that were planned along the Dream Cruise route have been called off, but the organizers and racers of the MSHS will still head to Lapeer for some wicked Mopar drag racing.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the MSHS has had to postpone several events over the past few months based on executive orders by state government in some areas. It has created a huge headache for series boss Dan VanHorn, but unlike so many other racing series which wrote 2020 off as a loss, the MSHS is still giving Mopar racers somewhere to exercise their Hemi horsepower.

Fortunately, the governor of Michigan has loosened the restrictions just enough for race tracks to operate under unique rules and, more importantly, Lapeer International Raceway owner Bill Jennings is looking to get racers to his facility.

In short, it is legal for drag strips to be open in Michigan, Lapeer is one of those tracks and the Modern Street Hemi Shootout racers want to go racing – so racing they will go.

Event Details

The Modern Street Hemi Shootout Hemi’NSanity sponsored by ThiTek is being held on Sunday, August 16, with gates opening at 8am and racing beginning at 10am. Racer entry is $90 if you prepay online, and that includes your pick of two racing classes. You can also pay at the gate, but waiting until the day of the event to register will cost a bit more. Racer entry at the gate is $120.

Thanks to the many incredible sponsors of the Modern Street Hemi Shootout, the Lapeer event will pay out a total of $15,000. $2,000 of that is specifically for the bracket class, which is open to all racers. The rest of the classes are listed below. The “index” classes are heads-up on the specific class index time. The dial-in classes rely on individual dial-in times for each driver and the heads-up classes including the Hemi Outlet and ThiTek Heavyweight class are wide open, heads-up classes without an index. Of course, the Z Automotive King of the Hill “class” is actually the winners from all of the other classes going head-to-head with dial-ins.

  • Z Automotive – King of the Hill (dial in)
  • Diablosport/ – HEMI Outlaw (1/8 mile heads up)
  • Demon Performance – Super Pro (8.50 index)
  • ThiTek – Heavyweight Class (1/4 miles heads up)
  • High Horse Performance – (10.00 index)
  • True Street Performance – Modified (10.50 index)
  • Legmaker Intakes – Super Stock (11.50 index)
  • Gearhead Fabrications – Street (12.50 index)
  • East Coast MoParts – Bracket (Dial In)
  • Litens High Performance – Rookie Class (dial in)
  • Anderson Composites – Legion of Demons Class (heads up – requires 6 preregistered)

Unfortunately, due to the many problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Dan VanHorn expects a smaller crowd than usual. Some people are out of work, so they don’t have the funds to make the trip. Some people don’t want to deal with required quarantine after traveling far from home. However, VanHorn expects a solid group of very fast modern Hemi-powered machines in Lapeer.

If you live in Michigan, or if you are looking to travel to do some drag racing, click here for more information on registering for Hemi’Nsanity. There is room left for racers and, best of all, they are allowing spectators. I have attended this event for the past three years and it really is an incredible racing program for racers and spectators. Some of the quickest and most powerful modern Hemi-powered machines will be in action, but even if you have a stock Charger SRT8, there is a class for you. There might not be as big of a crowd as usual, but if your local tracks are closed and you can get to Lapeer, Michigan on August 16 th , there will be a track waiting for you.

Finally, with so many series and events being canceled, with tracks going out of business around the country, it is important to support those series and tracks that are doing their best to operate during the pandemic. If you are a racer or a racing fan and you live close enough to Lapeer to come to the event, come on out and support the Modern Street Hemi Shootout and Lapeer International Raceway.

As always, this series and the events could not happen without the long list of sponsors. Below is a list of the companies who help make the Modern Street Hemi Shootout possible.
