Back in mid-August, the Modern Street Hemi Shootout series headed to Detroit, Michigan for ThiTek HEMI’nsanity, which is the most elaborate event on the MSHS schedule. In addition to the thrilling racing program that was held at Lapeer International Dragway for the first time, the MSHS also hosts the best Mopar display at the Woodward Dream Cruise.

We have already brought you a look at the Dream Cruise festivities, but with rain delaying a portion of the Metro Detroit event until the next event in Virginia, we are running behind schedule with our coverage from Lapeer.

However, we have finally gotten everything together, so here is a look at the racing results for ThiTek HEMI’nsanity in Metro Detroit back in August.

In the East Coast MoParts Pentastar Bracket Class, Mike Waiwood took on Darren Kaezor in the finals. Waiwood dialed an 11.82 to Kaezor’s 12.02, but when Waiwood grabbed the massive holeshot advantage (.0224 to .1420), the race was pretty much over. Waiwood ran an 11.89 on his 11.82 dial while Kaezor took the loss on the break-out with an 11.99.

In the Gearhead Fabrications Street Class Stephen Benedke went head-to-head with Frank Moses on the 12.50 index. Benedke grabbed the early lead with his silver Charger Scat Pack (above) and he never looked back, pulling down his second-straight class win while running a 12.53 at 105 to Moses’ 12.73 at 103.

1

The Legmaker Intakes Super Stock Class saw Guy Dalton take on Greg Green in a class of two modern Mopar machines running on the 11.50 index. Dalton and his Chrysler 300C got the big starting line advantage (.0639 to .1598), allowing him to lift on the big end and avoid breaking out. Dalton took the win with an 11.61 at 95 miles per hour while Green ran a losing 11.56 at 102 miles per hour.

In theTrue Street Performance Modified Class,Geoff Bracken took on Marcus Hughes in a battle of 10.50 index cars. Hughes took an early lead with a small starting line advantage (.821 to .1002), but Bracken’s silver Dodge Charger ran a 10.605 at 128, beating Hughes, who ran a 10.68 at 135 miles per hour.

The ThiTek Pro Class saw Jonathan Arancabia in his CJR Performance Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat battle Brian Brunt in his insanely quick Jeep Grand Cherokee. This could have been a great drag race, but shortly after the launch, Brunt ran into troubles. His Jeep launched so hard that the interior-mounted battery tray broke, allowing the battery to tumble through the interior, ground out and catch fire. Due to the loss of electrical power and the ensuring fire, Brunt only made it about 20 feet down the track. Meanwhile, Arancabia laid down a 9.46 at 144 miles per hour on what ended up being a free run to the class win.

The final round for the Demon Performance Super Prowas rained out, but series regulars Josh King and Greg Davies agreed to run the HEMI’nsanity final at the next event in Virginia. If you follow the series, you likely know both of these names, but King drives a gorgeous turbocharged Plymouth Duster while Davies drives one of the world’s coolest and quickest Dodge Magnums.

1

While both of these vehicles are incredibly quick, King had the clear advantage in this battle. Davies ran a new personal best in the Virginia-running of the Detroit finals, laying down a 9.23 at 147 miles per hour, but with an 8.162 at nearly 170 miles per hour, the turbocharged classic of Josh King took the win.

1
TheHigh Horse Performance Hellcat Shootoutsaw Michael England in his Hellcat Charger taking on Lenny Melton in his Hellcat-powered Challenger Scat Pack, both running on the 10.00 index. England got out to a better start (.0928 to .1426) and he held onto that lead, winning with a 10.16 at 129 to Melton’s 10.31 at 135. This was England’s second-straight Hellcat Shootout class win.

1

The Carlisle Racing Demonclass saw John Harding take on Jason Fetter in a battle of 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demons in a heads-up format. Fetter held the starting line advantage, but by half track, Harding had taken the lead. On the big end, Harding won with a 9.81 at 137 to Fetter’s 9.98 at 138.

1

The Southern Hot RodRookiefinals had Dawn Kasner taking on Eric Cunningham, both of whom dialed 12.50. Keep in mind, this class is for series newcomers, so it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that the numbers are a bit odd. At the starting line, Cunningham had a huge advantage with a far better reaction time (.1870 to .4482), but he ran an 11.72 on the 12.50 dial, breaking way out and giving the win to Kasner, who ran a 13.61 at 103 with her Dodge Challenger R/T.

Finally, the King of the Hill classwas not run due to the late rain that hit Lapeer Dragway. King of the Hill pits the winners of every other class head-to-head in a bracket format, but since it was not run, the winnings were split among those drivers who won each of the other classes.

In addition to the class awards, there were some other awards intertwined into the normal course of racing, including the titles below:
-Whipple Superchargers Best Reaction Time - Mike Waiwood – .022
-Whipple Superchargers Best ET Award - Dan VanHorn – 8.91
