Mopar has just made retrofitting a modern Hemi engine to a classic car or truck far easier, by launching a kit that includes all the electronics — including a drive-by-wire gas pedal.

The kit is being displayed at SEMA and is likely to make the rounds of regional car shows. Unlike most engine displays, this one lets you hear the engine at work:



Mopar is including an unlocked PCM, which is otherwise identical to a factory unit. It seems to have a standard configuration for the 392 (6.4) engine , but boosts 345 (5.7) output to 383 horsepower and 425 pound-feet of torque.

This is an impressive kit, which can greatly ease the repowering of old muscle cars — up to 1975 (for legal reasons) — with the 5.7 or 6.4 Hemi. The company is also making optional kits such as power steering, air conditioning, and exhaust manifolds — and both  part numbers and prices are available today .  (You can buy it with an engine or supply your own.)

No stock Chrysler engine produced the 485 horsepower of today’s 6.4 Hemi — and no classic Mopar V8 would run for years with no need to retune the carburetors. The modern motors are also far easier on gasoline, though that’s likely to be a secondary (or tertiary) concern for buyers. Get the full scoop / more pics .
