The first points event of the Modern Street Hemi Shootout series will be held this weekend at Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina, with the quickest late model Hemi-powered machines in the world preparing to clash on Saturday May 5 th . Technically the second event of the season, following the non-points race in February in New Orleans, the Rockingham race is the first of the five-event shootout to the MSHS championships.

Leading up to the first race of the MSHS 2018 championship battles, I spoke with Dan VanHorn – the man in charge of the most prominent all-Mopar racing series in the world. He talked about the growth through the 2017 season, the early success of the 2018 season and some new features for this year, including the Rookie Class and the fact that the grip experts at Mass Traction are prepping at select events this season. Rockingham is one of those events, so we can expect to see great conditions and great track times this weekend.

VanHorn explained that even with weather problems throughout the season – including a complete rain-out of the Michigan event – the Modern Street Hemi Shootout grew up roughly 20% in 2017. More than 200 different races came out to at least one of the five events last season and based on registration numbers from the pre-season event in New Orleans coupled with early numbers from Rockingham, 2018 will bring about even more new races.

Race Breakdown

Each event is broken down into 8 key classes along with the new Rookie Class. The classes at the MSHS Rockingham Event include the following.

* Demon Performance Super Pro Class - Heads Up, Run 8s to Be Competitive
* ThiTek Pro Class -  9.50 index
* True Street Performance Modified Class - 10.50 index
* Legmaker Intakes Super Stock Class - 11.50 index
* Gearhead Fabrications Street Class - 12.50 index
* East Coast MoParts Pentastar Bracket Class - Bracket Dial-In
* High Horse Performance Hellcat Shootout - 10.00 index
* Mass Traction Demon Invitational - Heads Up
* & Authentic Performance Rookie Class - Bracket Dial-In

For those wondering, while the majority of race vehicles are late model Chrysler Group vehicles with a late model Hemi, the series is open to older vehicles with modern powerplants. Last year, I attended the Milan event and there were some wicked classic Mopars running modern engines.

Event Costs

Racer admission to the MSHS events is $120 for most competitors and that includes a driver, the car and two classes. Admission for the Demon Invitational Class is $200, including 2 “normal” MSHS classes, the Demon class and the entry for a car and driver. Joining the folks early for the Friday track rental costs an addition $100 and crew or spectators can get in for $20 per day or $35 for the weekend.

Of course, none of this would be possible without sponsors, so Dan VanHorn wants to thank all of the companies who are supporting the Modern Street Hemi Shootout in 2018.
