NASCAR News & Discussion

It's been awhile since a dedicated topic existed for NASCAR discussion on Allpar. This topic is purely for news and discussion! 2021 has been an admittedly exciting year for NASCAR with a ton of changes and a lot of great storylines. So let's have some fun, strap up, and have some good-natured discussion on the sport.

This isn't the topic to bemoan and decry the sport. So hopefully we have some good NASCAR fans here ready to talk.

The topic is for the Cup Series, Xfinity Series, Camping World Truck Series and any local racing. Pretty much anything NASCAR related you want to talk about. :)

Stellantis is rumored to be fielding a FIAT Team for 2022 !!!
What in the world would they run as a model???
New Race, New Track

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to a new track. Nashville Super Speedway. A track NASCAR Xfinity and the Truck series ran about a decade ago then suddenly stopped. But it will be the first time the Cup Series races there. Nashville might be an exciting venue for the series as the city has a fair amount to do.

Any predictions heading into the week my fair Mopar-elite? :)
Brad Keselowski is my pick to win, but the surface is almost like Homestead-Miami. Good track for Reddick's 1st win!

Unless they submitted a car for approval last year for the 2022 model year, it ain't happening in 2022. There is an 18 month lead time.

Surely you jest. Fiat is all but finished as far as ontinuing sales in the US. Right now it dooesn't look like Stellantis is even interested in providing the $$$ and support to get Dodge back into Nascar. There is a small flash of hope since Mr Tavares is a motorsports fan and even dabbles in racing himself.
Come on guys, I thought everyone knew they were joking and we didn't need to talk about that. Lol.

CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES RECAP

We are currently in the middle of an Xfinity Race but lets not forget what happened the night before in the Camping World Truck Series.

In his first Truck Series start ever, NASCAR Cup Driver, Ryan Preece was able to bring home the victory in the Hunt Brother's Pizza Ford F-150 at Nashville. NASCAR's first race back in over a decade! The racing was thrilling and tight. It was also Ryan Preece's 3rd overall win in the top series of NASCAR, with two wins in Xfinity.

Preece passed Grant Enfinger with six laps remaining to become just the fifth driver to win their Truck Series debut. He celebrated in victory lane with a Gibson guitar, the traditional trophy Nashville awarded its winners during its first run.

Here is the top ten finishing order.

1. Ryan Preece - Ford
2. Todd Gilliland - Ford
3. Grant Enfinger - Toyota
4. Zane Smith - Chevrolet
5. Stewart Friesen - Toyota
6. Matt Crafton - Toyota
7. Ben Rhodes - Toyota
8. Ty Majeski - Toyota
9. Austin Hill - Toyota
10. John Hunter Nemechek - Toyota

XFINITY NASHVILLE RECAP

History has been written! I swear, this Nashville track makes for some extremely exciting racing! We had multiple intense restarts and drivers passing and rubbing cars together the entire race! Another TRULY thrilling race here in the Xfinity Series. I believe the best racing this year has come from the Xfinity Series. But let us not ignore the history made today. Kyle Busch, seventeen years after his first victory in the Busch Series, comes out today and wins his 100th Xfinity race win. What a milestone. A decade ago when he won a race at Nashville, he smashed the trophy Gibson guitar, but today he held it high and tricked the viewer that he was going to smash it, but instead kept it for his son. There is no denying the amount of talent Kyle Busch has. In his three Xfinity starts this year, he has won them all. And they haven't been blowouts, but instead very close finished with arguably the most competitive Xfinity field of drivers in decades.

Excellent racing all throughout and some great days for many drivers out on the track today.

TOP TEN FINISHERS

1. Kyle Busch - Toyota
2. Justin Allgaier - Chevrolet
3. Harrison Burton - Toyota
4. Josh Berry - Chevrolet
5. AJ Allmendinger - Chevrolet
6. Brandon Jones - Toyota
7. Jeb Burton - Chevrolet
8. Noah Gragson - Chevrolet
9. Austin Hill - Toyota
10. Riley Herbst - Ford

CUP SERIES NASHVILLE RECAP

Everyone is shocked as Kyle Larson cruises to victory at Nashville. His fourth win in a row and 3rd official points race win in a row. He hasn‘t finished worse than second place in a NASCAR Cup Series race since May 2.

Larson‘s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet led Ross Chastain and Chip Ganassi Racing‘s No. 42 Chevrolet across the Nashville finish line by 4.335 seconds. He paced the field by as much as five seconds in the closing 10 laps of this inaugural event.

Chase Elliott's 13th place finish was eliminated as well as his first stage win due to inspection failures at the end of the race. He got last place points because of the mistakes. It is also worth noting that Marin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski, and Denny Hamlin all had finishes below 15th, continuing their streaks of poorer finishes.

There was a good mix of drivers in the top ten. Let's check it out.

1. Kyle Larson (Stunning and silencing the field with yet another win.
2. Ross Chastain (Best finish of the year!)
3. William Byron (Another strong run by Byron)
4. Aric Almirola (Best finish of the year)
5. Kevin Harvick (Harvick really needed a good T5)
6. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (Great showing for this team!)
7. Daniel Suarez (The kind of runs they need to get)
8. Kurt Busch (Continuing their streak of good finishes)
9. Christopher Bell
10. Joey Logano

Jeff Gordon Will Leave FOX For Second In Command Spot At Hendrick Motorsports

I think many saw this coming, but today it was officially announced by Hendrick Motorsports and Jeff Gordon. Gordon will leave FOX after 2021. He joined FOX Sports in 2016. I included the link to a full article below.

Read Article.

The four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion will become the second-ranking member of the organization to chairman and majority owner Rick Hendrick. The 49-year-old Gordon will assume the executive management role effective Jan. 1, 2022.

In 1999, Gordon became an equity owner of Hendrick Motorsports and continues to be the only partner in the organization. He was first listed as the owner of the No. 48 Chevrolet when seven-time championship Jimmie Johnson began his tenure with the team in 2001.

Rick Hendrick says this plan has been in the works for many years, but he has no intentions of stepping away from his majority role.
CUP SERIES DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND, XFINITY & TRUCKS TOO!

Big HUGE racing weekend for all of NASCAR's top divisions. We have truck and Xfinity races on Sunday. The Cup cars race today and Sunday at Pocono.
CUP SERIES POCONO RACE 1 RECAP

In a thrilling ten lap fight, Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman raced bumper to bumper, side by side, for the win. With 3 laps left, Kyle Larson passed Alex Bowman. With one lap to go, on the final turn 3, it appeared Kyle Larson would win his fourth points race in a row, but no. It wasn't to be. Somehow Kyle Larson's tire went down and he slammed into the 3rd turn wall. Alex Bowman raced by and took away the win! Kyle Larson was still able to limp into 9th place. A shocking race, and a great race at Pocono. Hendrick Motorsports picks up 6 wins in a row. Bowman gets his 3rd win of the season. Kyle Busch came in second followed by Byron, Blaney, Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Logano, Harvick, Larson, and Brad Keselowski in 10th. This ended Keselowski's streak of not having a T10 in over 6 races.

Strong showing for Kurt Busch having led much of the race and winning a stage. He is now points-wise in the playoffs.

Hendrick Motor Sports scores its 6th straight win with Alex Bowman taking the checkered flag. Larson, who was leading on the last lap blew a right front tire and finished 9th. Kyle Busch was 2nd, Byron third, Hamlin 4th, Blaney 5th, Kurt Busch 6th, Logano 7th, Harvick 8th, Larson 9th and Keselowski 10th. Defending champion Chase Elliott finished 12th.

For tomorrow's race the top 20 will be inverted so Chris Buscher in the #17 will have the pole.
CUP SERIES POCONO RACE 2 RECAP

In a thrilling race to the end, drivers fought their fuel mileage for the win. With just three laps to go, William Byron had to go in for fuel, followed by Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, and many others. In the end, the top finishers succeeded by playing the fuel window game. Kyle Busch pulled off the win with Kyle Larson finishing second without fuel, followed by Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Bubba Wallace, Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, Ryan Preece, Tyler Reddick, and Joey Logano in 10th.

A great day for many drivers.

5. AJ Allmendinger - Chevrolet

Brad K. Leaving Penske

* Brad Keselowski Leaving Penske, Going To Join Roush Fenway As A Driver/Owner. The Sports Business Journal, citing unnamed sources, reported that Roush has “informed its partners that it has a done deal” with Keselowski. FOX Sports also confirmed the agreement. This comes a month after an initial report linked Keselowski to Roush with an ownership stake. Each report states that Roush has yet to confirm the deal out of deference to Team Penske, who would then need to find a replacement at that organization. It is likely it will be 2020 Busch Series Champion, Austin Cindric.

Keselowski is in the final year of a tenured and successful partnership with Team Penske. He competed in three Xfinity Series races for Penske in 2009 and joined the team full-time in 2010. He captured the 2012 championship driving the flagship No. 2 entry.

*NASCAR's Pocono TV Ratings. The Saturday Cup race peaked at 1.7 million viewers and the Sunday Cup race at 2.8 million. The Saturday Cup race, which apparently wasn't advertised good enough, was the least-watched Cup Series race on any network since at least 2000 (excluding rainouts and makeup races). It was down 45%. The Sunday race was on par with last years numbers, and the day most people expect a Cup Race.

Sunday’s Xfinity Series race at Pocono had 1.09 million. Saturday’s Truck Series race there drew in 497,000 viewers, a 30% increase over last year.

XFINITY ROAD AMERICA RECAP

I have said and will say it again. The Xfinity Series has been producing the most exciting racing of NASCAR's top divisions this year. This race was no different. The Xfinity series returned to Road America for a thrilling 45 lap event. AJ Allmendinger won the first two stages, but it came down to some very exciting last laps. With 5 to go, Kyle Busch snuck by and pulled off another victory to get victory 101. Kyle has one more scheduled Xfinity race this season. The last few laps were frilling and cars were flying all around the track. Tons of side-by-side and bumper bumping. It didn't just happen in the last laps, but throughout. It looked like Ty Gibbs, Austin Cindric, or AJ Allmendinger would get the win based off their strengths shown throughout the race. But things were constantly changing. Shoutout to the fantastic run by Michael Annet and Daniel Hemric with their top 5s.

Overall, it may have been my favorite race of the season. Great show!

Let's check out the top ten which had some great runs by many drivers.

1. Kyle Busch - Toyota
2. Daniel Hemric - Toyota
3. Michael Annett - Chevrolet
4. AJ Allmendinger - Chevrolet
5. Harrison Burton - Toyota
6. Kevin Harvick - Ford
7. Riley Herbst - Ford
8. Austin Cindric - Ford
9. Noah Gragson - Chevrolet
10. Justin Haley - Chevrolet

CUP SERIES ROAD AMERICA RECAP

A hot day in July some some interesting racing at Road America for the Cup drivers. Several different faces up front today including Xfinity driver Austin Cindric and Matt DiBenedetto. Also some very strong runs by the Chip Ganassi crew once again as Ross Chastain and Kurt Busch did quite well. Penske struggled, and struggled mightily today with all their drivers performing poorly throughout the race. Only Cindric and Matt D provided any glimmer of hope for the organization today and sadly for them, Cindric went out due to car issues while running up front.

As the race came to a close, Chase Elliott snuck by Eric Almirola and Kyle Busch and simply drove off. It was a very uneventful final 20 laps and became quite boring. Kyle Busch agreed in the post race. Despite not being up from the entire day, Chase Elliott led were it mattered most and picked up his 7th road course Cup win.

Lets check out the top five and give a thumbs up to some of these drivers up front having a spectacular day.

1. Chase Elliott - Chevrolet
2. Christopher Bell - Toyota
3. Kyle Busch - Toyota
4. Kurt Busch - Chevrolet
5. Denny Hamlin - Toyota
6. Chase Briscoe - Ford
7. Ross Chastain - Chevrolet
8. Tyler Reddick - Chevrolet
9. Martin Truex Jr. - Toyota
10. Matt Dibenedetto - Ford

Real good runs for C. Bell, K. Busch, C. Briscoe, R. Chastain, T. Reddick, and M. Dibenedetto. As well Martin Truex Jr. salvaged a top ten despite struggling all day. Right outside the top ten was Austin Dillion and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. who got strong finished. Brad Keselowski was running in the low 20s all day and came away with a 13th place finish. Almirola got 14th and Logano faded at the end for a 15th.

I can not say is the the most exciting race ever, because it wasn't. At times it seemed too long and a lot of single file racing. The Xfinity race the day before was the exact opposite and non-stop excitement.

Interesting that the announcers mentioned how the Hendrick Chevrolet have found more speed. They repeated that quite a few times during the broadcast.
Even they think this speed is quite unusual. Where there's smoke there's fire. Something doesn't smell right.
