New bottles of oil - inconsistent with foil seal.

Last time I bought a 5-qt jug of Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5W-30 at Walmart, I noticed that there was no foil seal under the cap. Oil still looked OK. Bought five 1-qt bottles sometime after that at Autozone, all had foil seals. Bought a 1-qt bottle, same type, at Autozone (same store) a couple of weeks ago. No foil seal. All still looked OK.

Makes me wonder what's going on. Are they somehow selling used oil? Is the factory inconsistent? Are there counterfeit bottles out there?

Has anyone encountered this inconsistent sealing of bottles of the same brand of oil, and particularly any of the Mobil 1 synthetics?

Lacking the foil seal, does the plastic cap still have the break-away plastic ring locked onto the bottle's neck?
That is also an anti-tamper method used for some containers.

Yes, the plastic can break-away ring was intact on all of these. Otherwise, I would have unscrewed the cap and looked every time.

In the past, every size of oil container has had the foil seal. This is something recent (within the last year).

I'd bring them back if there's no anti-tamper method at all. I wonder if Wal-Mart is getting a "different" Mobil 1. Would not be the first time a company made a cheep version of something ... like Moen selling a special Home Depot/Lowes faucet.

I don't purchase Mobil 1, but as far as I recall the 5 qt jugs I have purchased (Quaker State, Castrol, Havoline, etc) have had an foil seal whereas the 1 qt bottles did not. The 1 qt bottles did have the plastic breakaway ring. Do you recall if the 1 qt bottles with the foil seal had the plastic breakaway ring?

This has been my experience too. I haven't seen a seperate foil seal on 1 quart container in years. You can add NAPA brand synthetic oil (1 quart) to the list of 'no foil' seal. They all have break-a-way plastic caps in my area.

Oh. OK. Probably a money saving thing. If Wal-Mart turns out to be the only one without the foil seal I would wonder if the oil quality is also different. However due to their turnover they often have newer stock so if it's an ongoing change, they might just be the first with the new bottles. I have started buying eyedrops from them (mail order) because they are six months newer than CVS! (with postage they end up slightly cheaper, $2 on a $12 bottle. yes, salt water is crazy overpriced.)

ImperialCrown may also have put his finger on it.

I just found out there is a Wal-mart nearby and now that they have dropped their "Buy China!" program and started a pay increase for their employees, along with a tie-in to APUS for education benefits for many employees, I will probably buy my next synthetic supply from them. Though the 3.6 requires six quarts which is a PITA.

I just bought 2 jugs of Mobile1 from meijer (same price as walmart) and both had the foil. Also just bought a 6-pack of Mobile1 from from sam's club and none had the foil. Both were 5w/30. I buy the 6-pack to put in the additional quart needed on the 3.5l and for topping off between changes.

Very interesting though,
