(Pentastar V6) This is interesting and is consistent with a lot of reports I have seen on a few Jeep boards...

I had seen statements suggesting that the Pentastars made in the Saltillo plant were more prone to this and head gasket problems but have not seen any actual proof, so maybe it's a supplier issue. It's a lot of model years that are affected....

VVT is on every Pentastar ever made.

Update! We got our Durango fixed with new lower camshafts and it’s back running like a champ! The mechanic showed me one of the camshafts and it had heavy scoring and gouges on the lobes except for one cylinder, #3. The mechanic said the issue was due to the MDS system (edit: VVT) not providing enough oil and cheaper rocker rollers. The repair was new, harder camshafts, replaced rockers, lifter and oiling modules. He also told us that the repair seems to do the trick as he hadn’t had to do a second repair yet.
As far as I'm concerned, knowing the repair, we know the cause, and any insistence that it MUST be someone's pet grievance is ideological, not rational.

100%, the issue is completely the fault of Stellantis cost-cutting.

It is vaguely similar to the pre-2016 rocker issue on Pentstars - cheap rocker arms taking out a lot of nearby stuff.

So I have a serious question:
Did Chrysler learn their lesson and stop making Hemi cams from butter as well?

It is VERY well known in mechanic circles that Chrysler cams are soft. Hemi and Pentastar. It sounds like the new cams are properly hardened now - or at least better hardened than the originals. Did they do this as well with the re-release of the Hemi? I would sure hope so. Because aside from cams and followers that would eat themselves, the Hemi was well-known as an amazing engine and very well-loved among their owners.

This has been going on since the Hemi was introduced. They fixed valve seats dropping like flies very early on but not the cam failures. So I'm hoping someone with information can provide light on this. Hopefully it's not insider information that can't be released.

Running like a champ for now but personally I’d get rid of this vehicle asap. All that metal that came off the cam has been circulating through that engine and acting as sandpaper to every part throughout that engine. It’s only a matter till this causes somethings else to fail. Watch any video of these engines being diagnosed and the shop will always recommend a new engine not just a cam replacement. Long term that engine is a ticking time bomb. Stellantis did this fix the cheapest way possible
