1997 chrysler sebring conv with 2.5 ltr. The locks wont go up or down. Its strange because the motor or whatever makes the sound like they do when they go up and down. When you leave and get up to 20mph the sound goes off like theyre locking but nothing then either. its like both locks arent hooked up to whatever is supposed to raise and lower them. Like i said though, the sound goes off just like its supposed to when locks do work. But these dont. Weird. Anyone know anything?? THANK YOU MUCH FOR ANY HELP!!

I think you've solved the problem yourself. It sounds to me like the linkage that connects the lock actuator to the actual locking mechanism is broken, or that the gears (if it has them, I don't know if this car uses a solenoid or a motor with a gearbox to lock and unlock the doors) in the gearbox are stripped. There is no difference between the actual latch on a car with no power locks and one with power locks. There's a linkage from the manual actuator (the "button" that you pull on to unlock the door) to the latch, and the power lock system acts on this linkage to lock and unlock the doors. You're going to have to take the door apart to see what's what.

This car has the motor with gears that get stripped over time. The only way to fix is by replacing the door latch.

ok,ok, i gotcha. So the way to fix is to take the door panels off? Once theyre both removed i can replace the part with a used part from a you pull it yard? Maybe replacing the door latch behind the door panels. And not just on the drivers side, both passenger door and driver door? The key works just fine, i can manually raise and lower just fine, just wont go up or down with the power button. Its a two door car. Which im sure ya'll realized that. Man i hate to take the door panels off these doors. Seems they never want to go back on right.

I don't know how much I would trust a junkyard part. If the problem is that the plastic used to make the gears degrades over time, the ones in the junkyard could be broken or ready to break. If you can get a new mechanism on eBay, that might be the best way to go.
