Here is a fact on this forum:
People will post opinions you don't agree with.
too many people feel the need to attack or ridicule someone because hey have a differing opinion. That results in deleted posts, possible warning points and, if repeated enough, a vacation from posting here.
There is a solution built into these boards. If someone's posts bother you to the point you feel a need to attack or make fun of them, follow this procedure:
Click on your user name at the top of the screen.
Select People You Ignore.
The screen below pops up. In the bar, start typing the name of the poster you wish to ignore. As you enter the name, suggestions are displayed. Select the desired user name. Repeat.
Recently there has been a surge in negativity on the Allpar forums. This has gone beyond questioning decisions and or even being critical of those decisions. It many cases, it has simply become complaining.
Not every thread needs to be consumed with negativity and the same arguments. Complaints overshadowing actual news is getting tiresome.
This isn't to say that everything needs to be cheerful and seen through rose colored glasses all the time, but not every thread needs to be consumed with negativity and the same arguments. Decisions that have been repeatedly explained are met with derision and contempt.
There is a time and a place for these discussions, but not "always" and not in "every thread." Discussions are welcome in relevant threads. If these spill over to other, irrelevant threads, the posts will be deleted.
One of the things that has helped Allpar excel is that historically, insiders have shared information with us here before it has made it to the general public. Many of those same insiders either no longer share information, or do so on a less frequent basis, with at least one contributor sharing with me that he has considered no longer participating due to the constant negativity.
If you were an insider or contributor, ask yourself why would you want to come to this site and share information if all you heard were complaints, hyperbole, and oversimplification?? Insiders that have shared information or concerns from within the company have been lambasted for doing so.
This is not to stifle discussion. It is not stop criticism of FCA. Both are welcome. People can learn a lot by having a discussion with someone with an opposing viewpoint. Especially if you're willing to listen.
While we appreciate and encourage critical discussion of FCA, their products and decisions, Allpar is an enthusiast site and as such, the discussion should center on how to live with what has been decided, and what might be improved. Repetitive bashing, or bashing without context or cause of those topics will lead to posts being deleted, warnings, and possible suspensions.
Other topics that will result in the same actions include, but are not limited to:
Sergio Marchionne or any of FCA management.
Any member of these forums or their choice of vehicles, even obliquely.
Name calling or personal attacks of any of the above.
Chrysler is dead/dying
Many times the difference between being critical in discussion and bashing is the choice of wording. We welcome the former. The latter is unacceptable. Please choose your words wisely.
If all you care to do is complain and spread negativity throughout this forum, you should reconsider your participation. We would prefer that people self moderate, but if it continues, posts will be deleted and warnings issued.
In the past week I have seen several posts, each from different members, telling other members they should go to another forum for various reasons, the gist being that Allpar wasn't for them. This is NEVER acceptable. If you have a problem with a post, report it. If a member is repeatedly disruptive, the moderation team can deal with it much more effectively without perpetuating the negative atmosphere on the board.
If you tell someone to go elsewhere, your post will be deleted in its entirety regardless of the merits of anything else said in the post and a warning will be issued.
The same can be said about complaints about the moderation team. They monitor the forums on their own time and have jobs and lives
outside of Allpar. Do not complain about the moderation team not addressing things if you haven't bothered to use the report button.
I feel like this should go without saying, but apparently not. If you are considering posting a new thread, please do a quick scan through the forums to make sure a thread on that topic doesn't already exist. If one does exist, post there rather than creating a new one. It only takes a few seconds and prevents us from having a dozen new threads on the exact same topic that have to be merged into a disjointed discussion.
Over the past 2 decades Allpar has grown from a site that was frequented mostly by EEK enthusiasts to one that has a much larger appeal. Along the way it attracted insiders, giving it legitimacy. This in turn drew a larger audience who came here to enjoy the unique insights that the insiders had to offer.
We have long prided ourselves on the ability to not only celebrate Chrysler Corporation, in all of its iterations, but to be critical of the company when it was warranted.
Unfortunately, over the past 2 years, the dialog has become increasingly negative, and that negativity has begun to drive the narrative. That in turn has started to drive people away from the community, which is not acceptable.
To be clear, criticism of the company is, and will continue to be, allowed. What is changing is that we will no longer allow negativity to drive the discussions. If you feel that you cannot abide by this, you are free to remove yourself from the conversation voluntarily.
What does this mean?
To that end, changes will be taking place, beginning 10/5. Members who insist on driving the negative narrative (which, again, does not mean “negative posts” as such, but knee-jerk negative posts without reason or thought) will be banned. This include purposely posting false or misleading information — “purpose” being measured mainly by prior posts or discussions; attacking insiders (or any other member); or calling other members liars. It includes constantly taking jabs at the company, Allpar, or any of the subjects listed in the Forum Etiquette stickied at the top of the New and Rumors forum. It also includes constantly taking jabs at members who make justified criticisms.
Am I in danger of being banned?
This will apply to a very small number of people. People who insist on continually being negative and ignoring the positive news, or turning positive news into negative news, or harassing those who post critical news now and then, are the ones who will be affected.
If you haven't received a warning, or have received only one on occasion, you're unlikely to be affected. Short of posting something over the top, you will receive plenty of warnings before you would be banned. Before being banned, you would receive a “Final Warning,” and your ability to post may be suspended until you contact a moderator to discuss the situation. At that we would hope for a rational discussion. If your contact to a mod is an irrational attack on the mod or the site, a ban will be given.
If you have any questions as to whether you might be affected, you can reach out to one of the moderators.
How will it be determined if a person is going to be banned?
If a person has a history of making unsubstantiated claims, attacking insiders or other members or being unable to contribute to the conversation in a positive manner, they may be up for consideration. The decision to ban them would be decided upon by the moderation staff and at least four of the moderators would have to agree that a ban is warranted. (The person who actually effects the ban might not be one of the moderators who voted for it.)
If I get banned, what can I do?
If you get banned, you can reach out to the mod staff and appeal the decision. The moderator contacted will bring it before the other members of the mod staff, and it will be discussed and decided. This will not be a case of one of the mod team throwing their weight around, it will be an agreement of at least four of the moderation staff. While all mods may not agree with decision, the decision would be final.
If you find yourself repeatedly getting a "Final Warning" the threshold for being banned would be lower.
Notification of whether the ban is lifted or upheld will be delivered by either Dave or Christopher. They are currently the only ones capable of lifting a ban and will let you know of the moderator's decision.
NOTE: Creation of another account to bypass the ban will result in an immediate ban, again with no appeal.
How long will I be banned?
A typical “ban” would be for one full year. Further bans could be permanent. If the member’s reaction is over the top, the initial ban could also be permanent.
I still have questions.
You can ask a mod directly. General questions and answers will be added to this topic as they arise.
