My PT was listed as a car. State farm says it's a van. An ad for a local dealership says WAGON. What kind of vehicle is it?

According to the NHTSA, it's a truck. Does that leave any less confusion?

Vans are classified as trucks. Chrysler needed to up MPG of the truck class plus the PT cruiser didn't have good enough fuel mileage to meet the classification of car. Have a 4cyl to off set the V8's.
So, with pull out seats (that fold and has a handle and wheels) like the 2000 caravan and a flat floor area with all back seats out. Thus like the caravan it's a van. So Chrysler sold the idea to the government that the PT cruiser is a van and it is regulated as a van. Thus State farm call it a van. Wagon is a type of van that has 4 doors.
As for car listings, that's up to the seller, or who ever makes the rules for classified ads.
Chrysler PT Cruiser engineering development.
The classifications can be confusing. I saw the Magnum, Pacifica and PT all listed as trucks. It also has something to do with the rear suspension configuration that allows a flat loading floor that makes it a 'truck'.
It may allow the company keep the vehicle exempt from certain CAFE fuel economy and certain safety/emissions regulations. They are all still primarily passenger-duty vehicles though.
The NY state vehicle registration receipt calls wagons and window vans 'suburbans'.
There are as many definitions of car vs. truck as there are government agencies. The EPA considers it a truck.
When my Dad had company vehicles, the 1978 Chevy Impala wagon had truck plates from the state of Ohio but the 1980 Dodge B van had passenger car plates.
When I got my 2004 PT (1 year old) my Arizona renewal described it as a "Chrysler pickup". I went to the MVD to inquire and they changed it to van which they said was the proper description (for reasons stated above concerning CAFE and auto politics in general.)
I am the original owner of my 2005 PT. My title lists the vehicle as a Truck. The state of WI says it is a truck. Don't know why, but that is why my insurance is higher on my PT and on my Mini-Van. But I do love my little PT
BTW - I will keep my PT until they come out with another vehicle that has door handles just like the PT.. Back in 1969 they moved away from the Handles and more into the flush mount pulls to open doors and I can't stand them.. Give me a handle.

They got away from that for aerodynamic reasons, maybe some other ones I don't know about but cost may have been a factor, most likely you'll have to keep your PT for life. :p
Only other vehicle that has it, that I can think of is a Chevy HHR, Caliber, maybe some trucks?
