According to postings on several job listing websites, FCA is seeking a Lead Engineer for the SRT Performance division. Based on the description, the person hired to fill this role could play a major role in the development of future high performance vehicles from Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ram, helping to create and validate engines like the supercharged Hemi in the new Redeye.

This listing first appeared on LinkedIn, Glass Door and Lensa back on August 2 nd and for someone with mechanical engineering experience who is interested in helping to develop some of the world’s most powerful vehicle, this could be a dream job. The job listing title of “Lead Engineer - SRT Performance Development” is juicy enough to get all sorts of attention, but when you read further, the job sounds even better.

“The SRT Performance Development Lead Engineer's prime responsibility is the performance of SRT Engines, past examples include SRT Demon, SRT Hellcat, SRT Viper and SRT Apache. The Performance Development Lead will work together with the SRT Chief Engineer and Technical Lead to specify Systems and Components capable of meeting program performance targets. Work with Design Release Engineers to produce suitable System / Component designs. Work with Dynamometer Laboratories to test and develop derived solutions.”

That is pretty vague, but the Lensa listing offers a bit more insight into what the ideal person for this job will be doing:

“The Team Lead - SRT Base Engine Development is responsible for leading a group of engineers developing high performance gasoline engines, & conducting base engine calibration, achieving all program attribute commitments. Examples are the 6.2L Hellcat & Demon V8s.

The Team Lead ensures that direct reports own and achieve all specified FCA group SRT customer performance, durability, reliability, NVH, and emissions targets while holding program timing/cost targets.”

In other words, this person isn’t just working to develop future SRT products, they will be involved with developing and testing the engines that will motivate upcoming high performance vehicles from Dodge, Jeep, Ram and (hopefully) Chrysler.

Responsibilities for this role include:
* Plan resources, timelines and monitor the work of a group of 5 engineers conducting gasoline engine performance & mechanical development, base engine calibration, and engine durability testing
* In conjunction with the Chief Engineer & Technical Lead - Design, lead technical reviews at the working level and with senior management (including reports on status to objectives, issues, risks and mitigation plans)
* Develop & implement corporate strategies & best practices for engine development/testing/calibration, lead quality improvement initiatives, collaborate with the design & vehicle calibration teams
* Establish production limits for SRT engine performance dyno tests, and provide launch support to the plant
* Provide employee performance feedback at yearly reviews. Coach and work with individuals to continuously improve their engineering/leadership skills to ensure that the team improves its overall effectiveness

So, it sounds like FCA is looking for an engineer to play a key role in the development, testing and production of the next lineup of high performance engines like the supercharged Hemi in the Hellcat and Demon. GlassDoor estimates that the position will pay around $80,000 a year, so the job sounds pretty sweet from all angles, but before a bunch of Mopar fans rush to apply – it should be noted that the company has a pretty extensive list of requirements, and of course they do. We don’t want some random schlub developing the next super-engine from Mopar.

Basic Qualifications:
-Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace, Applied Physics, or related Engineering field from an ABET accredited university
-Minimum of 5 years of experience in powertrain engineering (or equivalent)
-Minimum of 3 years Engine Development or Base Engine Calibration experience
-Thorough understanding of Gasoline Engine Fundamentals -- Especially combustion and air flow
-Ability to quickly verify the quality of Dyno Test and Virtual Analysis results, and identify the cause of potential issues
-Outstanding problem solving and analytical skills
-Highly motivated, self-directed, & have the ability to manage multiple complex projects
-Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
-Good team working skills
-Strong Microsoft Office skills

Preferred Qualifications:
-Master's Degree in Mechanical , Automotive, Aerospace, Applied Physics, or related Engineering field from an ABET accredited university
-Formal problem solving training and experience (e.g. Kepner-Tregoe, Taguchi)
-Design for Six Sigma training and experience
-Passion for performance cars and motorsports
-Experience in engine simulation and CFD Analysis
