The 2008-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee had only small, cautious changes to the exterior, with the interior improved considerably more, and the base V8 upgraded most of all. Off-road angles improved across the board, ground clearance went up slightly, and aerodynamics were unchanged.

In appearance, the grille was extended downward, and the headlights given more obvious curves; fog lamps were lowered and the front fascia was made into two pieces, so serious off-roaders can remove the bottom half.

Perhaps most welcome to the average buyer, the 4.7-liter V-8 liter engine was reworked, with major gains in power and small gains on mileage.

American Grand Cherokees gained a new option, the Mercedes 3-liter V6 diesel. The Hemi and SRT Hemi options remained; transmissions were five-speeds, with the Mercedes unit on the V6, a different Mercedes unit (W5J400) on the diesel, and the 545RFE on the V8s.

As for transfer cases, only the V6 came with the New Venture NV140 single-speed, full-time unit; the rest had the NV245 two-speed, with a 2.72:1 low range ratio and 48/52 front/rear torque split. This one had an electronic limited-slip differential, and was optional on the gasoline V6 as well as the others. Both were carryovers from past Grand Cherokees.

New options were auto-leveling high-intensity discharge headlamps, hard-drive stereo, and a rear-seat streaming TV system. The projected Overland and SRT-8 gained heated rear seats and power-ventilated front seats.

The "MyGIG" stereo had a touch-screen and took voice commands, with a 20-gigabyte hard drive to store music, photos, and voice memos; it also had real-time traffic with trip rerouting. Other options were a backup camera, backup sensors, auto high beams, rain-sensing wipers, memory seats and mirrors, iPod connectivity, and 18-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels.

New technologies included Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist, and Trailer Sway Control.

  • Hill Descent Control, standard on 4x4s, worked in "4WD Low," and allowed the car to go down at a controlled speed by using the brakes and gear reduction.
  • Hill Start Assist held brake pressure for two seconds upon release of the brake pedal, to prevent rolling back on hills.
  • Trailer Sway Control, optional on all Grand Cherokees, reduced trailer sway.

The interior was also modified, with a two-tone instrument panel, soft-touch surfaces, updated styling, and a standard tilt and telescoping steering column. The Limited adds two-tone leather and bright chrome accent rings, and the Overland had real wood steering wheel rim. LED illumination was brightened; on Limited and Overland, a dark-tinted lens faded to reveal the gauges when the car started. Overland also gained Saddle perforated leather seats.

2009-2010 Grand Cherokee changes

The 2009 Grand Cherokee's Hemi engine was upgraded to 357 horses and 389 lb-ft of torque with better mileage. The instrument panel was upgraded to include tire pressure monitoring and fuel saver notification, but the fuel saver notification was dropped. The rear DVD went to a 9 inch screen; and an iPod interface was optional. A leather group became optional on Limited and Overland. The SRT8 got the Performance Pages system, better leather, and a bigger DVD screen.

For 2010, the Grand Cherokee lost the 4.7 V8. Laredo X became, for Canada, Laredo North Edition, with 17-inch wheels, power sunroof, upgraded stereo, backup camera, and rear parking assist. An automatic oil change monitoring system was added, standard, and Overland was dropped.
