The 2008 Dodge Viper ACR that broke the Nürburgring Nordschleife track record

The 600-horsepower 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR, a street-legal, rear-wheel-drive machine, is capable of doing 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 180 mph.

A Dodge racing team arrived at the infamous 12.9 mile Nürburgring Nordschleife road course, intent on breaking the track record in the home of Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and Porsche, on the continent that holds Maserati, Lambourghini, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Bentley, and Ferrari.

The 12.93-mile Nürburgring in Nürburg, Germany, was built in the 1920s and is considered by many to be the most demanding purpose-built race track in the world. SRT engineers with no experience at the track had one day to prepare, and one day to fly around the track, despite unfortunate weather. In just his third lap, Tom Coronel, who raced the Dodge Viper at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, set a record (surpassing the prior certified time of 7 minutes, 34 seconds) - which he then proceeded to break just two laps later.

Lap times were:

Lap 1 - 7:42.7
Lap 2 - 7:35.0
Lap 3 - 7:24.1 (New record!)
Lap 4 - 7:24.9
Lap 5 - 7:22.1 (Another new record)
Lap 6 - 7:24.5
2009 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR modifications from the standard Dodge Viper include suspension changes, weight reductions, track/street tires, and aerodynamic improvements yielding 1,200 lb of downforce at 150 mph.

Viper SRT10 ACR details

The Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR is tuned for track performance, with coil-over racing adjustable dampers, two-way adjustable shocks (adjustable without removing the wheels) with a large range for compression and rebound. The KW dampers and forks are machined from solid aluminum billet, with spherical bearing mounts. A new front stabilizer bar increased roll-stiffness. Lightweight forged aluminum wheels were optimized using Finite Element Analysis to achieve a lower mass. They wear Michelin Pilot Sport Cup street legal race tires.

The 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR is aero, suspension, wheels, and tires are 40 pounds lighter than the Viper SRT10 coupe. The optional Hard Core package further reduces the weight by another 40 pounds, for a total weight savings of 80 pounds.

StopTech two-piece, slotted, lightweight rotors combine with the Viper SRT10's Brembo calipers to reduce mass, improve brake cooling, and reduce fade. The rotors, tires, and wheels combine to reduce 60 pounds of unsprung, rotating mass.

The 2008 Dodge SRT10 Viper ACR stops from 60 mph in less than 100 feet.

The 8.4-liter aluminum V-10 engine produces a ground-shaking 600 horsepower and tire-smoking 560 lb.-ft. of torque. It features an aluminum engine block, heads with Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC)-shaped combustion chambers, large valves and Variable Valve Timing (VVT). VVT electronically adjusts when the exhaust valves are open and closed according to engine speed and load, allowing the engine to "breathe" cleaner and more efficiently.

The two-piece intake manifold combines cast aluminum lower with smooth runners for better air flow, bolted to a die-cast aluminum upper plenum. A revised air-cleaner box with a low-restriction filter sends air through a dual electronic throttle control into the intake module.

Within the cylinders, pistons are equipped with large-diameter floating pins with bronze bushings for high-load capability. Forged powder-metal connecting rods are secured with aircraft-quality fasteners for increased fatigue strength.

The Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission (model TR6060) conveys power via a GKN ViscoLok speed-sensing limited-slip differential.

The Dodge Viper ACR was hand built at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit.
