What can we expect from the future Jeep Wrangler “JL” and its pickup spinoff, the “JT”?

According to Sergio Marchionne, the new Wrangler will start production at the end of this year, in the Toledo plant currently making the Cherokee. He expects to be able to pump out around 300,000 Wranglers per year from that plant, running at full capacity (“on paper,” he cautioned — so the actual output could be lower).


The goal is to sell the Wrangler worldwide in larger numbers, rather than restricting offshore sales to feed US and Canadian demand. Unfortunately, at just about the same time, Ford will start up its new Bronco, about which little is known so far — will it be a Wrangler clone, or a pickup-based SUV with a tough appearance but little articulation? Will it matter to buyers, either way?

Sergio Marchionne seems to think the Wrangler will rise above competition anyway; he called the new Wrangler “perfect,” then hastily defined perfection as “It fixes all the problems of the old car and it keeps the identity of the Wrangler.”
