A surprisingly small number of 2019 Grand Cherokees and Durangos are being recalled because the supplier didn‘t harden the front differential pinion gears properly. Eventually, this can lead to power loss, not to mention slipping while in Park. Owners may hear a gear whine or grinding noise as the gears wear down.


The solution is a new front differential, which customers don’t have to pay for.

Only 301 Grand Cherokees and 214 Durangos in the U.S. are affected, along with an Allpar-estimated 60 or so in Canada and possibly a handful in other countries. All were built from January 16, 2019 to January 23, 2019. The recall only affects two-speed transfer cases (with a low-4x4 mode).
