Take a look at this refreshed Pacifica in the screenshot:

Now the rendering I did for Mopar Insiders:

See any resemblance? ;)

Ugh I loved the way that car looked in the rendering. I can't wait!
Mips based processors is kinda weak. Android doesn't even officially support the mips instruction set any more. This will make development and future OS upgrades way more difficult, as well as app development. Mips also isn't known for having particularly competitive chip selection in terms of performance. I'd much rather see something ARM based, preferably from Qualcomm. Anyone know what actual version of Android it's based on yet?

It uses Intel Atom for automotive industry. Ate leat that's the case for more powerful unit.
then why does it say
"In combination with an upgraded 50K MIP chip"
Unless that is in reference to some sort of additional discrete processor.

It should be MIPS as Million Instructions Per Second.

I assume they are not back to QNX as the base OS? :(
I have similar questions since my curiosity has been peaked. Just wondering if there is better development support with Android Auto or security at the gateway? Did I say that right?

"Android" means the base kernel will be Linux, not QNX.

It's Andoid Automotive, not Android Auto. Yeah, Google can't name things for s___, but they're very different products.

I am looking forward to seeing it, but I *SERIOUSLY* hope FCA listens to the buyers and car reviewers:

We need physical buttons for the heated and cooled seats back!

I hate having to take my eyes off the road to turn on or adjust my seats. Also, why can't I customize them to come on all the time (regardless of temperature) and on ALL SEATS? I bought a 7 passenger vehicle, but only 1 of the 4 heated seats come on with remote start. Come on, FCA!

THIS.

THIS.

THIS.

My biggest complaint with Uconnect in my KL. Soft buttons for heated/cooled seats & heated steering wheel & x2 on the all seats coming on instead of just the driver's seat.

Uconnect 5 is hugeeee. I mean it's so important for FCA. In the last years German car makers leapfrogged everyone else when it comes to infotainment. Their execution was not the best but their technology content, screen size and screen resolution were top notch. They have advanced voice recognition commands and firmware on the air upgrades. Finally all of these is coming to FCA.

I don't know about US but in the EU currently cars are bought by technology content. Technology as some safety assist like automatic braking, lane keeping or detection and similar. Cars which have it in base trim are more desirable. Then other part of technology is infotainment. Size of the screen, resolution, rear view camera or 360° camera, mirroring which is wireless and of course on the fly on the air updates. And then virtual cockpit or fully digital instrument cluster which BTW is also run by infotainment hardware.

FCA lacks in these departments. In the next 24 months FCA will do a lot to improve this. AFAIK all upcoming MCA models or all new models for EU and US will have this new infotainment as standard or as an option.

Just take a look at upcoming Grand Cherokee. 10.1" screens for both infotainment and instrument cluster. I will put my money on availability of full navigation on instrument cluster. For sure they will offer it on Alfa and Maserati with fully digital 12.4" cut instrument cluster.

I am excited about all the new changes. It sounds great! But I am worried too. QNX made Chrysler's unique... and now we will be like everyone else. So will UConnect stand out anymore? I sure hope so...

I feel bad for QNX/Blackberry. What will they even do now?

Since it's the underlying OS that is changing, the OEM or automaker can skin it to look however they want...in this case, like "Uconnect" (to the extent FCA wants that).

QNX has taken some big hits in the automotive sector lately, but they should be all right...they still produce embedded software/firmware for mission-critical applications, such as commercial aircraft systems.

Thank you for sharing that with me and all of us. :) I was not aware of all of that.
It's a major leap in capability and power, but I still can't help but think they will regret leaving the higher security of QNX. I will also wonder how much information Google is collecting on where we drive every day. Android's core is open source but it's surrounded by proprietary Google stuff and we know Google loves your data. They've made billions on their “free” software.

The Alexa Assistant, in fairness, is worse.

QNX is a product you pay for. You are not the product, QNX is. Android is a product you don't pay for. That makes you the product.

If you’re using an Android phone, Google may be tracking every move you make (at https://qz.com/1183559/if-youre-using-an-android-phone-google-may-be-tracking-every-move-you-make/ )
'Alexa, are you invading my privacy?' – the dark side of our voice assistants (at https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/oct/09/alexa-are-you-invading-my-privacy-the-dark-side-of-our-voice-assistants )

I am pretty impressed, though, with the increased capabilities. I'll have to think about how much I want Google to know about me, but in this age of facial recognition cameras and license plate readers and such, maybe it doesn't matter any more. All your data—medical, financial, location—belongs to anyone who has a few bucks to buy it.

(I can't help but think that all this facial recognition/instant location info is a major boon for the mob. They can now figure out if someone is an informant or undercover agent in minutes, and extortion must be a breeze.)

A bit Kia-ish but okay.

Not to argue that your concerns as a consumer are unwarranted, but Android Automotive is an embedded system that the OEMs (and by extension, "you") are most definitely paying for. As @KrisW pointed out above, this is not the same thing as the Android OS used on mobile phones.

Now I suppose in theory there could turn out to be some security or privacy flaws with Android Automotive itself, but at this stage there is no evidence of any such flaws. As far as I know, there are no vehicles on sale yet that use the Android embedded system, so nobody has had an opportunity to do any kind of poking around into them.
