URGENT! 99' Cherokee hood cable broke. How to open hood?

18503 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  ImperialCrown
When pulling on the hood release the cable snapped. How can the hood be opened? We took the grille off and saw nothing inside that can be tripped manually. Any ideas?

A long trip is ahead and all the fluids needs checked.

The Cherokee actually has a left and right side hood-mounted latch with a link running between the two. The cable attaches to the drivers side (left) latch. Are you sure that the cable broke and it isn't just a stuck latch? Is one side of the hood popped up?
Have a helper pull on the inside release lever while you 'thump' on the left or right front side of the hood to see if a latch releases. If not, you might see one by removing a headlamp or looking up from underneath the vehicle and trying to actuate either latch with a long screwdriver.
Lube the latches well if you get it open.
Correction: The cable attaches to a hood mounted pivot/return spring and a link goes out to the two latches. Lube all.
100% positive it is not just stuck. We put in a heated garage and played with it for an hour. Nothing worked. The cable from the inside to the first latch seems to be at fault.
It will have to be released from underneath. Get the splash apron out of the way and shine a light up at the underside of the hood. With a long stick-like tool try to move the pivot latch lever manually to release it.

How far up the cable from the pull release handle did it break off? Is there enough cable showing to lock a pair of vise grips onto the end and pull towards you to release?
