Rumors of a new Ramcharger SUV have been swirling for months, if not years, now. Speculation surged when FCA announced their new plan of using the Warren plant for Ram overflow and large Jeeps; and when they revealed that the next Wagoneer would be based on a Ram platform.

Mike Manley, the Jeep and Ram chief, said there was an ”opportunity with a new frame for the next-generation Ram ... to take a large SUV off of it."

As Ford and Toyota found out, it’s hard to compete against the tough, well-built Chevrolet/GMC lineup of full-sized SUVs; but with the Wagoneer and Ram pickup both clearing a path, a Ramcharger might not need to hit more than 30,000 sales per year.

The Ramcharger could be a Ram, but as a passenger vehicle, it’s more likely to be a Dodge. Indeed, the company could simply move the Durango name onto it, leaving the Grand Cherokee alone on its platform for a while.  That would return the Durango, which started out based on a pickup chassis, to its roots.
