What's the deal with exploding fridges and propane-based refrigerant?

There have been fatalities & injuries, not to mention property damage from people trying to save a buck on refrigerant & using butane or propane, etc.
Some owners may not be forthcoming or honestly don't know what someone serviced their A/C with.
Refrigerant in the old days used to be Ammonia, which was always fatal, more or less.

A customer may give up on a leak after emptying multiple cans of miracle 'stop-leak' into an A/C, we lost an $8000 reclaim/recyle/evacute/refill station because of one instance. This was also during the mid-summer height of A/C service season, so the monetary loss was much higher.
Hence, a sample was required before attaching the shop machine. We would take a sample of an unknown refrigerant to make sure that it wouldn't pollute our shop A/C reclaim/recycle machine after that.
The authorized refrigerants are tested for safety but some morons read "propane based" and try using propane. There could be a defect also in particular brands of refrigerators...

There seems to be a constant tension or possibly conflicting goal of minimizing the effects on ozone and the effects on "global warming" when setting the standards for an acceptible refrigerant.

Just like so many other home appliances lately, it might have been a good idea to buy what used to be sold vs what will now be sold today (from a durability / longevity / repairability standpoint).
Nothin’ personal but I'm not really willing to trust random links from people who might just be playin’ around to get clicks. things don't seem to be lasting as well but I doubt that has much to do with efficiency.
