Which headlights should be on during low/high beam?

Here's a pretty easy question....or so I thought, originally. Now that I've converted Emily's (94 Lebaron GTC) front header panel to the old style flip up headlights, I'm starting to wonder which of the lights should be on and when should they be on? My early driving career had me behind the wheel of these things but I don't recall what the lighting pattern was for the life of me.

  • During low beam operation, should all 4 headlights be on?
  • During high beam operation, should only the inner most headlights (2) be on?

If someone could set me straight, I'd appreciate it. Thank you again.

Should be as follows:

Low beam operation - low beams only.
High beam operation - low and high beam lights on (all 4 headlights)
But do low beams = 4 lamps on or only the 2 outermost ?

I should have been more precise. Yes, the outer most lights should be the only ones on when in low beam only operation.
You should do a write up on how to convert to flip. I pass on a lot of lebarons to buy with non flip lights.

High beam lamps do not have a low beam filament in them. I have seen some people convert their cars to having all four lamps on for low beam by replacing the high beam lamps with the low beam lamps because they also have a high beam filament in them.
With the composite headlight system ( 93 and up ) only the inner ( high beams ) light when in high beam mode.

That is not true. Just last night I had some fool in the left turn lane across the intersection from me with his high beams on and all four lamps were on. And this was a newer car with the composite head lamps.

I have had a 92 and 93 Daytona, both have the aero style headlamps like the LeBaron. George W is right, low beam is the outer headlights only and high beam is the inner headlights only.
Chrysler did that. GM and others lit all four lamps.
Yeah....it's a Chrysler product we're trying to help someone with...

True, but if I am interpreting George's post correctly, he's saying only the hi beam headlights illuminate when the hi beams are selected and the low beams turn off. Every 4 headlight system I've seen all 4 headlights are on when hi beams are selected. I just checked my '10 Journey and all 4 illuminate when I switch to hi beams.
It depends on the bulbs. The old sealed beam units always had a low beam light that was really a dual filament (low and high) bulb. I think some of the aero bulbs are single filament for low beams.
If I remember correctly for the newer composite headlamps only the 9004 / 9007 lamps are dual filaments.

And for the older sealed beam replacement lamp housings that have a replaceable bulb, the H4 lamp is dual filament.
