I've noticed from the beginning of AWD on the LX chassis, the AWD cars had more backspacing than the RWD cars, so that the neat looking RWD wheels probably don't fit on the AWD car.

Why is this different between the two drivetrains?

Good Question!
I hadn't ever realized there was a difference between AWD and RWD wheels. Every FWD car I can think of has very little, or even positive backspacing. My Stratus is +42mm.
It must be something to do with the axles. Maybe space required for the CV joints? Maybe something with the steering geometry?
