Wow. I wouldn't say that the interior is far too cheap and plasticky. I was rather impressed with the Limited interior materials when I drove a Compass a few months ago. I mean, it's not a JGC Summit interior, but it's still got a great interior for the class, of which, that I'd gladly have.

It looks like Subaru finally worked on the interior of the Crosstrek, it was awful for a long time. Better than my Caliber, but not by much IMO.
I haven't been in one yet to have a say one way or the other, but it can't be as bad as the earlier Chrysler products under those companies that I shall not name here. :D I'm not as much of a snob when it comes to interiors...though I do appreciate a really nice one when I see it. As long as everything works and doesn't break in my hands...cough...like our Saturn Ion interior...cough...then I don't tend to complain much. Plastic can be very durable, if not overly fashionable.

I always ignore reviews that mention that without providing concrete examples. it just seems like an easy way for certain auto journalists to pass their bias without having to justify it.
I suppose journalists are entitled to their opinions as well...it is a free country after all...however, when writing a comparison article it would be helpful to include details to support one's opinion. Otherwise the opinion is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.

"This, and Jeep’s inability to make the body panels line up straight even after 75 years of making automobiles, caused concerns about the build quality."

Eh.
This is one thing that gets me on so many of these new cars. FCA really needs to step up panel alignment and gap consistency. My 14 RAM is horrendous! My 16 Town n Country is not great either, however I spent some time re-aligning the fender and hood and got it looking a bit better.

I just dont understand how they cannot seem to catch this stuff, but I will admit I dont work in a production facility, so there is not much I know about producing a new car.

I was just at my local dealer and was looking at a brand new 300 C and the over car is just stunning! But the damn driver door is not aligned with car! WTH?

Exactly this. I've seen plenty of these criticisms pointed at brands that aren't loved but I see the exact same issues in the paragons of build quality/materials.

From what you describe, it sounds like the issues are related to old product and/or factory set ups.

Hopefully, once the great plant shuffle is fully complete, and every product has been fully renewed, this will be a thing of the past.

So I've had my Compass for a week now: Overall its a very well built car, the 9 speed to this point has been buttery smooth, the 4WD works seamlessly in the one instance I used it and the gas mileage is decent. I'd expect it to get better as it breaks in and I do the first oil change. The dimmer switch doesnt work but apparently its a known issue and there is a TSB to fix it coming out later this month, it has Keyless Go but not enter which is slightly annoying after being used to my 200 and no auto headlamps although it appears to have the dash sensor for it. Minor qualms I know lol.

lol - iktf; going from my fully loaded dart to my not-as-loaded WK made me realize how spoiled that Dart's tech made me. lol. I loved the enter'n-go, audio controls on the wheel and the auto-headlights (which the jeep has too; we just have a towel across the dash because of the AC power-on pattern. Likes to blow warm air onto the windshield & fog it up for us. lol)
