2023 Jeep Wagoneer Yearlong Verdict: Competent but Not Charming

From the article:

Still, there’s some room for improvement. Off-road capability was underwhelming for a Jeep. Although we never expected this Ram 1500–based Jeep to be able to tackle the Rubicon trail, we wanted it to at least keep pace with rivals like the Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 on moderately challenging trails. Instead, the Wagoneer is best suited to stick to crossover-friendly dirt and fire roads, its underbelly too low-slung and flanks too exposed to tackle anything more difficult without body damage, even with the air suspension at its max ride height. Unlike the rest of Jeep’s lineup, the Wagoneer isn’t a vehicle we’d go out of our way to take on the path less traveled.

Another Jeep beaten off-road by the competition.

Soon, Ford and GM will have more off-road capable models than Jeep will have.

Great brand direction, Stellantis!!!!

Erik, c'mon. From your posts I know you are smarter than this.
You're going to compare a Wagoneer to a Tahoe Z71? Isn't the Z71 an "off-road" package?
How about we compare a REGULAR Tahoe to a Wagoneer?
Or, wait, how about a REGULAR Tahoe vs a Tahoe Z71? Would the Z71 outperform the Tahoe, too?
I guess GM and I are smarter than Jeep who does not offer an off-road package for the Wagoneer.

Nobody disputes that Wagoneer is a luxury SUV that is great for large groups and long cruises.

What is pathetic is the lack of any off-road package.....especially since the Ram it is based on offers off-road packages.

It is a damn Jeep!!!!!

Why do so many not care that this vehicle wears the Jeep badge?

Make it a Chrysler and it would fit the brand perfectly. Then offer an off-road version under the Jeep brand.

But slowly, more and more of the Jeep lineup is lacking off-road capability trims and are getting beaten by other manufacturers.

XJ, WJ and TJ were sold together and all were unquestionably the best off-road while selling incredibly.

That's fine. But you quoted an article where a Wagoneer was being compared to a Z71 Tahoe.
Again, c'mon!!!

We can dispute that no off-road pkg is being offered by Jeep. But then, do NOT compare a Wagoneer to another vehicle, any vehicle, fitted with an off-road pkg.
A Jeep should be superior in base form to a Tahoe with Z71 package.

It is NONE
Who ever wants to take a $70,000+ vehicle off-road is dumb. No need to make a Wagoneer a off-road vehicle.
That is NONE of your business.

People can spend their money any way they like.

You are not king determining what people NEED.

As others schooled you, nearly every other vehicle in this class offers an off-road trim except the brand that is known as the off-road brand.....and despite having the parts in their parts bin to make it happen.

I'm sorry.....am I missing something?
Why does a Wagoneer need to be "trail rated?"
The originals, which everyone seems to be crying for, were "truck-based wagons" basically to haul family c#$* around in.
The current version, if it doesn't break down, seems to fit that perfectly. And in a much more luxurious envelope.
Why does a Ferrari have to be fast?

Why does a Rolls-Royce have to be luxurious?

Put the minivan under Maserati and you can make HUGE margins!!!

Who cares if it has no performance or is not sporty?

Just slap that Maserati badge on anything!

When Chrysler became Plymo
Did Jeep (the off road brand) create a Wagoneer that could beat the Chevy Tahoe Z71 (a mainstream brand)?

The original justification of soft Jeeps was that there would at least be one capable trim of that model.
Then it devolved to “best in class” capability.
Now it’s apparently devolved into who cares.
Who cares? is the new, enlightened brand management taught at Harvard!

I guess Jeep is now Plymouth. The Jeep brand stands for nothing. It is an appliance.....compare to Toyota except Toyota has all those off-road trims available. Better compare it to Nissan instead.....who is doing so well!

Lately, FCA/Stellantis took the Maserati route and used the air suspension as their "off-road" package. While the air suspension does give more ground clearance, it comes at the price of less articulation and much, much worse ride.

Pre-Daimler, Pre-FCA, Jeep was able to offer the best handling SUV and the most capable off-road SUV without all the gimmicks and electronic wizardry (that now fails often).

They have lost their way.
