Hang on to your butts, because it's about to get nuts -- the off-road wars are here! Ford is this close to launching the new Bronco, but Jeep is trying to steal some thunder with the new Xtreme Recon off-road package for the Wrangler. Making its debut Friday, this over-the-top package includes 35-inch tires, a lift kit and an insane 100:1 crawl ratio -- and will be available on the four-door Wrangler Rubicon and Wrangler 392. We'll get our first live glimpse of the new Xtreme at the 2021 Chicago Auto Show on July 14.

Straight from the factory, the Wrangler Rubicon is pretty impressive with its 84.2:1 crawl ratio, so upping this to 100:1 is kind of bonkers. The fact that the Xtreme Recon beats the Bronco's 94.7:1 crawl ratio is the kind of oneupmanship we're totally here for.

4.88 rear axle only available on the 4-Door Rubicon trim with manual transmission. No Diesel, 4xe or 392.

Price not announced.

Factory 35s, 4.88s, and a lift?

Holy cow. I never thought I'd see the day.

Between blown hotrod engines in factory Challengers and fully built Jeeps off the showroom floor, these last several years may end up being the "golden years" of automobiles when we look at them in hindsight as old men.....

Yes, but with the manual transmission only and Pentastar.

Between the "death wobble" and poor road dynamics, it would not surprise me to see them drop the solid front axle on the next Wrangler.

Solid axles are fairly outdated technology. Even extreme off-roaders are using independent suspensions with long travel.

@Bob sheaves created Lil Blue decades ago. It can be done.

I recall hearing rumors of switching to IFS for the TJ. Gosh that was over 20 years ago. And then the same rumors for JK. And then again for JL.

Jeep knows who took them to the dance, and they aren't going to ditch her.

The true buyers for Bronco are going to find out quickly that modifying the suspension will be extremely limited, and extremely expensive compared to Wrangler. The solid axle advantage is not only limited to articulation and strength, it's also easier to customize which pulls in the street crowd as well.

Does Bronco handle curves on the highway better? Maybe a little. But these are focused vehicles right? And focused off road at that. Why would Jeep give up their huge advantage in the segment to make it handle only slightly better?

My Gladiator rides smooth and handles fine for an off road rig. I wouldn't want IFS on this vehicle.

Ford offers a 2" lift kit through parts.

You cannot take the top off the Grand Cherokee and it will not go where the Bronco and Wrangler can go.

Driving to work yesterday evening, I realized one thing…IFS or solid axles, it doesn’t matter that much either way. What I need now is ground clearance and water fording ability, just for my darn commute to work. Had to drive through a foot of water to get to my parking garage, and it was getting deeper by the minute…they closed the section of road shortly thereafter. A snorkel would be nice too. Fortunately, all these things are possible with a Wrangler, Gladiator, or Bronco.

The 392 and Xtreme Recon Package would not be available if Bob did not do such a great job helping to make the Bronco a true Wrangler competitor in nearly every way....in fact, Bronco beats Wrangler in many areas that Jeep aficionados have been requesting.

Some people were expecting more 2022 changes (there weren't really any of much significance for Wrangler or Gladiator).
That might be because so much happened during 2021 - stuff that was released mid-year to take on Bronco rather than wait for the model year changeover.

This company in former form didn't make any radical changes to vehicle lines during their run. A nip here, and a tuck there, some techno upgrades and that was a mid cycle refresh. Risk takers they are not, but they have kept the profits pouring in, so there is that. And that is much different then the old Chrysler version of feast and famine.
