I don't have the links handy, but there are a number of threads on http://www.aseclub.net in regards to folks not only swapping 3.0 (and 3.5, and 3.8) Mitsu V6s in for the 2.5 in the Avenger/Sebring coupes, but for getting a 5-speed manual to work with the 2.5L V6.

If I recall, a custom "crank sensor trigger wheel" is involved.
 
Hi can some help me . I want to swap my 5 speed box for a 6 speed. The Pajero is 6G72 motor 12 valve version. What gear box do I need. Also the transfer case needs to be on the right side of car when your looking at it from the front

I think you'd have better luck on a Mitsubishi forum as these motors were more common in cars, not SUVs, in the Chrysler lineup.
 
Those engines all have the same bolt pattern.

The A543 5-speed will fit.

The transmissions from the Stealth/3000GT are on the wrong side of the engine bay to work in the Vert.

I've done the 3.0L swap, and a bunch more, to my 2000 Sebring Convertible, so if you need any help, let me know...
Was just thinking about a V6 pt. Is it true that those V6s were oil burners? Thats what has been said about a few round here.
 
I think the 4-cylinders used a different bolt pattern, so you'd likely need a trans and engine.

I have a newer (2005) 6G72, an SOHC, 24V variety. It does not burn oil.

There are numerous versions of this engine, however, so what is true of one may not be of another.
 
Also, if I was gonna do a conversion like that, where you're talking about more than just a long-block swap, I'd look very hard at using the powertrain from an LH car. The 3.5L is a great motor, and having the engine sit in the car the right way without requiring a RWD conversion also is a big plus, IMO. I would imagine that there is a way to swap/adapt the entire "k-frame" (for lack of a better word).
 
The 3.5 is a very wide engine because of the over head cams in the heads and the engine may not fit in the engine bay.

I don't think it was ever truly fixed - just delayed long enough that most vehicles were junked before it occurred.
The big fix was the clips to keep the valve stems from dropping - this resulted in a vehicle that smoked and used a lot of oil.
The other issue was the design still results in oil being sucked through if the valve stem seals get old and brittle. That still happened more so than on other engines. But while there was still smoke, they didn't use near as much oil. It's still common to see the last of the Chrysler 3.0 equipped vans (up to 2000 model year) belching smoke at traffic lights and drive throughs.
And I've seen the DOHC 2.5 cars doing the same.

Welcome to Allpar. The Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero doesn't even look like any generation was offered with a 6-speed manual. I agree that if anyone has done this upgrade, it would likely be someone on a Mitsubishi forum.

The '98 Sebring JX with the Mitsubishi 2.5L V6 also burned and leaked oil. It had over 106K when I got it and it has about 137K on it now. After I fixed the leaking cam seals and valve cover gaskets, the oil consumption has fallen. It does blue exhaust smoke and odor occasionally, but is manageable.
The 2.5L is a 24 valve engine. It is a fun car and I just haven't had the gumption to replace the valve seals.

Wondering about fixes for that. I doubt i'll put 100k on a motor, my 09 challenger has 35k.
 
Similar question I have a 93 voyager with the 6G72 sohc 12v and am interested in the possible routes to do a manual trans swap without swapping the motor as well. Not afraid to spend the time and money(to a point). Any info tips and trucks is greatly appriciated. Thank you.
 
NEED HELP, I have a 1996 Dodge Caravan with a 3.0L with an automatic 3 speed front wheel drive transmision, I would like to know if I can swap it for a manual transmision since the caravan has a history of having big issues with the transmision. Plus, i would just enjoy having a manual trans on a caravan.

This would not be an easy swap. First, this generation of van was not offered with any manual transmission (at least in the US) so you don't have a donor for the pedal assembly and clutch mechanism. You'd have to find something from an export van, if they offered it, or modify something from another car. Second, you would have to find a transmission. They did offer the 5 speed behind the 3.0, so you could find one from an oldercar but you'd have to rig up the crank sensor somehow. third, and the hardest part, will be electronics. 1996 is an OBDII vehicles so you'll likely have to figure out ways to fool the computer.
Expect a swap like this to be expensive and time consuming. It would be much easier on a 1995 or older van. It would be much cheaper to fix the the speed transmission (which actually is pretty reliable in these vans) than to swap to a manual transmission.

1) The 2.5L engine is designated 6G73, what is the designation for the 3.0L engine?

2) The designation for the 4 speed auto in my Sebring is A604, what are the designations for ALL of the 5 OR 6 speed manual transmissions that will fit / work with the Mitsubishi 2.5L & 3.0L V6 engines?

3) In my search I have found transmissions that mount on the passenger's side instead of the drivers,
are there any vin codes or models this is standard?

I have found that the 6G72 has three versions

SOHC 12 valve

SOHC 24 valve (the version refered to in this topic)

DOHC 24 valve (don't know if the bolt pattern is the same as above)

I am currently trying to find a source for info on which ( if any) of the above listed cars came with a
6G72 & 5-speed/6-speed combination.

I am still looking for
1) The designations for the 5 OR 6 speed manual transmissions used with the 6G72
2) image of the engine to trans bolt pattern for the Mitsubishi 3.0L V6(6G72).
3) Any numbers on the case of the transmission to match it to a Mitsubishi 3.0L v6 (6G72).
4) Maybe an adapter to swap a manual transmission to the Mitsubishi 3.0L v6(6G72).

Does anyone have any info/ideas?

A junkyard will have an interchange manual with that car information. GT and GTS appear to be different (maybe different gear ratios?) and the transmission appears the be specific to just the Eclipse 2000-2005.
