Jeep has confirmed the rumored return of the Jeep Cherokee for late 2025. Essentially using a Wagoneer S body (complete with the same KM body code), the new Cherokee will be powered by a hybrid gasoline-electric powerplant—presumably a US-specific version of the 1.6 liter gasoline engine from Dundee, Michigan. Jeep did not release any other ... Read more

So just like Grand Wagoneer intro playing off the old Grand Wagoneer but having little actual link style wise to the old version, I see the same with the XJ comparison to this new Cherokee.
This looks more like a WK successor than an XJ successor.

If they really did believe this is a "successor" to the XJ then they would hurry up and get in the next Goonies movie. But this thing doesn't evoke the memories I had with my XJ and what I wish my XJ was. I believe AEV did the conversion of one and so did Jeep. I think it was called the Africa or Dakar. In either case this is just another rental vehicle for fleet use and filling a void where a true successor should be. Probably because they've been so focused on what else to slap a Jeep name on that they forgot about their core vehicles for the brand. I still say they should scrap this or make it a Dodge and rebadge the yet to be RECON as the Cherokee. Regardless of size differences. Maybe just put the RECON in the Goonies movie, it will be a big plug to the success and put a "goonies never say die" badge on it where the "trail rated" would go. Jeep really should put more vehicles in movies beyond Jurassic Park. These movies are seen worldwide and it's free publicity over generations to come.

The silhouette and mist styling cues are not KL at all. Not

it doesn’t even evoke the XJ design, just like Grand Wagoneer did not evoke SJ design despite them trying to play the nostalgia card in both cases.
Like I’ve said all along this is a WK-ish vehicle since WL grew a bit.

I owned one almost new and an ordered brand new XJs. For us as a family in the 90s they were pretty cramped. They were however excellent off road vehicles. With that said, this new Cherokee is light years better looking then the KL its replacing. Whether it'll have off road chops is something we'll have to wait and see on. I just wish it wasn't front drive based. Imho the only Jeep that is OK being front drive based is a Compass.

Nobody ever said it was going to be a neo-XJ or even a neo-SJ.. lol It's just another in a long line of Jeep Cherokees. For better or worse.

That said.. it still looks like a Wagoneer S rebadge without the battery to cut down on its ground clearance. (And obviously a functional 'trunk'.)

This Jeep really needs a full-on TrailHawk variant, not just Trail Rated, but Rubicon-level capability to sell.

Yep, no body said it was an XJ replacement, but yet that’s the image leading the videos they released.
They want to lure the XJ faithful with a not-XJ that might be better than the previous Cherokee.
They just set themselves up for these disappointing comparisons with that video. They didn’t learn a thing from the Grand Wagoneer about using nostalgia to plug a non-nostalgic product.

Remember Ralph showing images of the old and how they implemented old design cues in the new Wagoneers? You just had to squint one eye and squeeze a lemon in the other and they look so much alike. The only reason they even made the Wagoneer was simply for competition with GM and the reason this so called Cherokee is "boxy", by their terminology, is because they see how the Rav4 is doing well with their sharp lines. All these new vehicles are just responses to whatever else is out there and no real direction. But you know who is doing their designs the right way? VW. The ID is a great resemblance of the past as well as their previous Bug and I believe VW is also behind the new Scout, an unmistakeable design that absolutely resembles its heritage. Not saying VW sales and quality are great and their pricing is high on some, but they are in tune with what people like.

Wagoneer gets way too much hate on here for being a very well done vehicle with growing sales. My only complaint is I personally want a Trailhawk version. But their new off-road variant they're offering right now is pretty close to what I need.

The new Wagoneer Overland variant isn't much different than the AT group that was around already.

Advanced All-Terrain Group package, $2,595
  • 18-inch off-road aluminum wheels, 275/65R18 all-terrain rubber
  • a two-speed transfer case,
  • 3.92 rear axle ratio
  • pronounced chrome tow hooks
  • an electronic rear limited-slip differential,
  • a front-axle skid plate, a fuel tank skid plate/shield, and a transfer case skidplate shield.
  • Quadra-Lift air suspension as standard,
  • active damping

Overland: $9,000
  • standard steel skid plates,
  • an electronic limited-slip rear differential,
  • and a two-speed transfer case.
  • 20-inch aluminum wheels are shod with 32-inch all-terrain tires
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Rock Mode
  • front tow hooks and a removable rear tow hook
  • Heavy Duty Trailer Tow package with trailer brake control (10,000 pounds)
  • Jeep says only 2000 units will be built

The Wagoneer S can be had with $25K off. With $25,000 off, is the Jeep Wagoneer S the best EV deal going?
I guess it's design wasn't to peoples liking, or maybe it was just its size for the price? Since the Cherokee is basically on the same level, let's hope it will sell better.
It's just the price period. This vehicle adds nothing to the EV arena from a technology standpoint and doesn't differentiate itself from its class in terms of ride, handling, or capability either.

Still surprised they aren't using the Trailhawk for advertising.. makes me wonder if they're going to have one at all. It would be a shame if that were the case. On a side note, I wonder if it'll have an inline 6.. 🤔

Looks?
XJ 101.4" wheelbase, 167.5" long subcompact SUV
New Cherokee 113" wheelbase, more than 187.6" long midsize SUV
SJ - Wheelbase - 108.7" | Length - 186.4 inches | Width - 74.8"-78.7" | Height - 66.4" | Weight - 4,514lbs
XJ - Wheelbase - 101.4" | Length - 167.5 inches | Width - 67.7"-69.4" | Height - 64" | Weight - 3,664 lbs
KL - Wheelbase - 106.3" | Length - 182 inches | Width - 73.2" -74.9" | Height - 67.8 | Weight - 4,046 lb
KM** - Wheelbase - 113" | Length - 192.4 inches | Width - 74.8 inches | Height - 64.8 | Weight - 5,700 lbs

** KM, being based on Wagoneer S, I used that data, though height and weight will definitely be different bc it's not an EV, width could be different too.

That said, the wheelbase is the longest its been since SJ.

XJ gained a lot of room for the size by having relatively thin doors and square styling.
Some will argue the point, but crash standards have generally made doors and roof pillars thicker so the same footprint may have less interior space now.

Some have already posted that it's wrong to compare the new Cherokee to XJ, but Jeep is making that connection in the public's mind and may be setting them up for a huge disappointment.
I still think this Cherokee, given it's probably size and likely capability level is more of a spiritual successor to WK than XJ.

Most people probably won't make that distinction nor care. The Cherokee was bought by many for all sorts of recreation and outdoors activities. It makes sense to compare the two.

It would be a marketing disaster to say, hey the new Cherokee is more like the old Grand Cherokee, and the new Recon is more like the old Cherokee. And no one is comparing either to the Libertys, even those were damn good vehicles in many ways. I might be biased.

Instead, keep it simple.

Plastic everywhere even where it does not belong, shameless reputation mining won’t fool any long time Jeep owners. Not that the XJ was perfect far from it but it was simple and easily repaired and modified. So much aftermarket is available for it that the values have climbed from ~~$2-3K to $8-$12k and more for good examples….
