A spy shot from Chris Doane shows a prototype of the 2019 Ram 1500 , coded “DT,” which appears to leave Ram’s long-standing drop-fender “big rig” look behind.

2019 Ram 1500

Since the 1994 Dodge Ram, Dodge and Ram pickups have had a “big rig” look with lowered fenders, aped after a time by Ford. The outlines of the current pickup seem to have more of a conventional shape, á la Chevrolet (or past Dodges). In fairness, the company may be trying to trick spy photographers with fake cladding — but they haven’t done that before.

Purists can rejoice in a clear renewal of the crosshair grille.

This is the truck Ram is counting on to combat Ford’s all-aluminum F-150s, as well as whatever Chevrolet can throw at them. Ford and GM worked together on a ten-speed automatic, which both companies are using (with some technology licensed from Ram transmission supplier ZF). So far, Ram has kept the new pickup’s secrets fairly well hidden, but we do have some ideas of what to expect.

Though it probably won’t appear immediately, a straight-six is in the Ram’s future, complete with forced induction — to outpower the current 5.7 Hemi engines, with far less weight up front. The base powerplant could even be a 300 horsepower turbo-four “Hurricane” four-cylinder .

We expect stop-start systems and a hybrid option to bring gas mileage down, a key for meeting CAFE standards. All the pickups may share an efficient 48-volt electrical system. The 3.0 liter V6 diesel engine is likely to continue, with its new programming.

2016 ram tailgate

Chris Doane suggested that the prototype he shot may be a MegaCab; some have claimed that the Ram will be growing in size, while others believe it will stay roughly the same. Regardless, a dual-function tailgate is likely, if only as an option.

Not even close. I love how they are trying to make the camouflage look like a Ford Super Duty. Nope grille camouflage and how it goes across where the crosshair would be to the headlights.Mike V.Great job Ram engineers!!! That is one of the best camo/cladding jobs I have ever seen. :D

I'm not concerned ;)

I am glad to see new mules out and about.

MikeHa! Now that you mention it, its pretty obvious they tried to make everyone think its the F150. Look at the tail lights and obviously the headlights. Screams F-150.

This time aero who played even a bigger factor than the 2013 update when the trucks got air ride suspension to lower it closer to the ground for aerodynamics as well as active grille shutters and whatnot. From what I've seen and what I've been told the truck will feature a more rounded front end which will help in the co efficiency of drag numbers while retaining the big rig styling look. Remember how the 1999 Dodge Power Wagon concept looked with a rounded front end period if you look at the early drawings that I posted of the Ram 1500 DT you will notice that the truck carries a similar shape.

Read the whole post here. Nope. You can't see, but the camo has foam padding. The fenders still drop on the sides from what I've seen.

Ram and dodge have used deceiving camo for every program that changes the envelope. The mega mules were given caps, the crew were given mega like bumps behind the rear glass.
As far as raising the fenders, that would require new structural members and assemblies attached to it, batt tray, air cleaner, tipm etc. Just raising the fender skin would only aid packaging giant headlights.
Quite an expensive gamble IMO, but expensive gambles were in our DNA when I was there.

tomazThis is the lastest Trend of PU Truck Prototypes to hide......Anything styling wise. GM made Mules/Prototypes that resemble F-150's and Vice Versa.Exactly...

Chevrolet went to the extent of putting a foam oval on the grille to make it look like a Ford. GM designed wheels and blocky mirror say elsewise.

Note the rear camo mesh for the tail lights on the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Shaped like the current F-150 tail lights.

2019 GMC Sierra 1500, on the other hand kinda hard to hide that grille.

Ford tried to make it look like the Chevrolet crossbar on the early 2018 Ford F-150 mules. However, they forgot the rest of the truck wasn't camo'd.

I can confirm that Ram will be using a similar shape rear tail light to that mesh. Also note how the camo is going up the rear windows. Remember my post about the Ram 1500 getting cues from the Rebel TRX Concept.

That camo is hiding a kink up in the rear window design, similar to what the Ram Rebel TRX Concept had. It was put on the concept as feedback from the public. It is a characteristic currently held by the Silverado and Sierra.

I think that's the new Ram R150, Lol! I can't really see anything from that camo picture. I'll wait until the real thing shows up instead of trying to make guesses based on that. That camo looks like the wrapper off of a f150.
I think they have been slowly losing the "big rig" design in the look of the truck over the years. I'd like to see it return a bit more pronounced. It's a characteristic I think that should live on. I couldn't handle looking at another "box" on the road.

Dave Zcues.

queues are lines, cues are hints/styling characteristics. que's are, um, Spanish whats.

I agree, Ram stylists should keep producing new themes for Ford to steal.Sorry, fixed that!

If there's one thing Ford did was Ram up the interior. I like how people show their new Ford truck interiors like nobody's ever seen that before.

hemirunner426If you look at a Toyoda,it has bits and pieces from all the big 3 trucks. Then there is the Nissan, can't believe people buy them!!

I'm sure Ram will do us proud.Lol! That's what I've been saying to some people. Depends on what side/end of the truck you are on, you can see an influence. I think Toyota was trying to combine all the attributes people liked in other trucks. I guess that's one way of doing it. Man, that's funny.
