The current political climate has been decades in the making.
Yep, this has been brewing for quite some time. Infernos don’t start out that way, they need a spark and kindling, and need time to grow.

Indeed. Not to mention that social media didn't help. In fact, it probably aggravated it.

Not just social media, most media. These 24 hours-a-day news channels continuously blast crap, just different flavors. At work, the patients watch it continuously. Granted there’s not a lot to choose from, but come on…change the channel once in a while! People at home are watching it all the time too. Listen to some music, read a book, talk to your family, go outside, take up a hobby…just turn off the talking heads. And I’m following my own advice.

I'm going to share my experience with the "news" channels. I am a left of center person, I have been for 61 years. I quit listening to my preferred news station because I felt it was making me aggravated. Since then, my aggravation levels have been normal. So, here's a message to all on here who watch this crap on a daily basis, stop and reexamine what it's doing to you. None of this is news at all. I know I am in a better place because of it. I do not base my friendship on whether you're a lefty or a righty, I don't care, you're free to believe whatever you want, but you'd find me to be a skilled debater, so my friends and I enjoy the good things in life instead.

Yep. I only watch the "local" news - mainly for the weather/traffic reports. Not that I need to know the traffic hang ups since I telecommute. Otherwise, I only check the 24 hours news channels on occasion. If I watch it too much, I get aggravated.

Yup. Well, TV news has been trash for decades. Headline news glosses over deep issues. Again, as Allpar people, we've all learned from Bob Sheaves and others (if you read the other pages, Pete Hagenbuch, Burt Bouwkamp, Willem Weertman, and such) that nothing is as simple as a paragraph read aloud on the TV makes it.

I'd like to peg part of the problem on the end of the Fairness Doctrine, but maybe it was inevitable given the multiplicity of channels and Internet sources. We no longer all get our news from three TV networks (and/or PBS) and a small number of newspapers and magazines.

Sadly what happened to national news has also happened to our local news. Our regional newspaper is part of USA Today and most of the local reporters were dismissed, and our weekly town paper, which was owned by that regional paper, is now just one story in a regional weekly which may or may not have a local reporter. So now everyone gets their news from one of a number of rather highly charged and biased media outlets (mostly Facebook groups) that play to their audiences.

Well I hope the moderators are going to be fair and discipline both sides. I have rarely visited Allpar in the last 4 years because of what I saw as one sided treatment. Before that, I would start everyday with Allpar and usually check it several times each day. But after seeing certain regulars getting away with bashing certain people and supporters, but anyone who spoke out against them being deleted, I had enough. That is the problem with moderating a forum, most of the moderators allow their own beliefs get in the way. Who gets to decide what is or isn’t offensive these days? Sadly, this nation has become weak and allow words to be harmful. if an idiot calls you a name, why should you be upset, their an idiot after all. The only way to moderate a forum is either a zero tolerance policy, or no holds barred. Anything in between is useless.

Got any examples or are you just whining?

Moderators have shown extreme restraint toward those who have continually (and I mean people with 15-20 warnings in a year) violated TOS with insults and snarkiness toward others and moderators. At least two of them should have been removed permanently from this site, IMO. I think people lose sight of the fact that this is supposed to be a friendly and family-friendly site.

Years ago I actually felt the same way. Bob Sheaves and MoparNorm (RIP), in my view, were largely allowed to operate with freedom while other members were met with heavy handed moderation. I hate saying this but I saw a massive improvement in the environment of this forum in more recent times.

This is quite off topic to the spirit of this thread however.

Both were suspended - more than once. I will admit we did give them a little more slack than some, because they contributed materially much more. A similar situation would be in place if ImperialCrown, say, were to suddenly start getting out of hand. People who contribute tremendously to the general knowledge of the group do get a little more leeway. Maybe it's not fair, but I doubt anyone here has not learned a great deal from Bob in particular.

When you said the part about ImperialCrown suddenly getting out of hand (hypothetically), I suddenly had the mental image of a patient we had several years ago who suddenly went berserk. He looked like a naked Peter Griffin from Family Guy and was being restrained by several nurses and security guards as he tried to rip a paper towel dispenser off the wall.

Now, I’m sure that’s not what you meant by “getting out of hand”, but left to its own devices, my mind will think of something weird automatically. So a group of moderators trying to restrain an unruly fellow moderator….well, there you go.

I am a moderate conservative. And my experience is exactly the same as yours. The news today appears to be designed to make us mad no matter our political leanings. My sweetie and I rarely watch national news anymore. It just makes us mad. To be exact, I'm thinking of just canceling our live-streaming service and just get Netflix and one of the home remodeling channels. That's about all we watch anyway. Beyond the news, which is terrible, the three networks seem to put out nothing but offensive junk.

Also, I don't believe a car forum is the right place to discuss politics. We come here because of our love for Mopar vehicles. And that makes us a community. Politics will only divide us.

If someone doesn't care for Allpar, there is this easy thing you can do to solve that issue for you. It's called "not loading the Allpar page" or "not logging in to Allpar". It's quick, and it's painless, and it's guaranteed to resolve or lessen the issue of "not liking Allpar". That way one doesn't have to come on Allpar and start slinging insults to moderators and administrators, and not get themselves suspended and/or kicked off the site. See? Now doesn't that sound easy?
