Fiat has revealed a new aluminum-block 2.2 liter diesel to be used in the Alfa Romeo Giulia. At 337 pounds, it’s 44 pounds lighter than the iron-block 2.2 in the Jeep Cherokee. In the Giulia, 0-62 mph comes in 6.4 seconds.

There are four power levels, topping out at 207 horsepower and 347 (corrected) pound-feet of torque; with that version, buyers get 325 pound-feet of torque come at a low 1,500 rpm, and 236 pound-feet at 1,250 rpm.

The block is made by FCA subsidiary Teksid, and uses a single variable-nozzle turbocharger (a technology pioneered by Chrysler), with a turbo speed sensor to avoid over-speeding.

The aluminum version might be reserved for Alfa Romeo, or might be used on other vehicles, such as Jeeps, in the future. (Thanks, MJAB).
