Stop hanging around the wrecking yards, hoping to salvage a Hellcat motor. Mopar is now selling a “crate” version of the 707-horsepower engine, along with kits for putting it into pre-1976 cars and trucks. The Hellcrate contains the engine; but you can also get “plug and play” installation kits, carrying everything from computer to gas pedal.

Hellcrate: Hellcat crate engine

The price might be a tad steep for some, but this is a warranted crate engine, and it’s a fraction the price of, say, a Hellcat Challenger. The optional easy-install kit comes with an unlocked powertrain computer, allowing for all kinds of performance tuning, as well as a time-saving front accessories kit. Here’s what the Hellcrate will set you back:
  • Hellcat engine assembly (68303089AA): $19,530 — but after a dealer discount, we saw it advertised at $14,996.
  • Hellcrate Engine Kit (177072452), $2,195
  • Front end accessory drive (177072492), $675
  • Air filter element (177072491), $100

The crate engine and optional kits are being shown at the SEMA aftermarket show this week. For more photos and information, including exactly what comes with the kit, see our permanent Hellcrate page .
